DU DRY LAW CHANGE Christian Endeavor President Declares Opposition to Smith View. “Those who charge that prohibition is responsible for the illicit sale of in- toxicating liquors ignore present-day conditions in Canada under so-called government control and have forgotten, or would forget, the license,” said Dr. Daniel A. Poling, pres- |ident of the International Society of | Christian Endeavor, at the annual in-| young | terdenominational meeting of people of the District last night at First Baptist Church, Dr. Poling's subject was “The Chal- lenge of Patriotism.” Continuing, he sai “The 33 organizations I repre- composed of Catholics, Jews and Protestants, do not indict the personal good faith of individuals. Personalities are incidental to the issues. An amend- ment to the eighteenth amendement within the memory of men now living is as likely as the draining of the Atlan- tie, while authority, however conferred upon the several States—authority to define and determine within the State the operation of the eighteenth amend- ment—would accomplish pandemonium in government. State definition and determination of this national law would lead logically at the last to 48 nations instead of 1.” The speaker attacked the plan of Gov. Smith for an amendment to the elgh[eemh amendment, and closed with the statement: “We shall not impugn the motives of those who are against us, but we shall contribute our utmost endeavor to defeat their purpose.” Elgin Smith, president of the Colum- bia Federation, B. Y. P. U, presided; Dr. Samuel Judson Porter gave the in- vocation; H. Lee Smith, former vice presidenf District of Columbia Christian Endeavor Union, led the singing, and Miss Virginia Cureton of the Petworth B. Y. P. U. gave a violin solo. McDougle, jr. for the Epworth Leagues, and Paul L. Brindle for the Luther League. Dr. Poling was introduced by D.
