Safeway Stores experienced a jump of 35 points to a new peak at 740. The new shares, which were admitted to trading following approval by stock- holders, changed hands between 15012 and 14915. The new stock, to be is- sued in exchange for the old common on the basis of five for one, amounts | to 1,500,000 shares. Sanitary Grocery was another that moved spectacularly. At 435 the price was up 20 points. Deere common was another in the high-priced category to move forward sharply and at 485 recorded a gain of more than 10 points. On the other hand, heavy selling made itself felt in Tubize Artificial Silk, carrying the price down 13 points to 525. Among the lower-priced specialties that established new peaks were Ap- ponaug, up over 2 points above 66, United States Foil “B”, 3 points higher at 46l5: Universal Insurance, up 2 points above the previous final at 50, and Walgreen, which crossed the 61 level, up more than 3 points. Activity in the mining group was x{mpatheuc with renewed buying of this class of shares on the Stock Ex- change. Bunker Hill and Sullivan and Newmont Mining were the favorites among the higher priced issues. Car- negie Metals, up over three points, was discounting rumors that it was to go into one of the larger combines. The oil shares did litttle one way or the other. Barnsdall warrants were exceptions, establishing a new high above 17 in sympathy with strength in the class “A” stock on the big board. BULLISH OPERATIONS EXCITE PUBLIC INTEREST Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 16.—From the standpoint of the individual advances in active shares, the stock market of the last few days has been one of the most notable in this year's bull cam- paign. To the record made last week, when 60 per cent of all the stocks dealt in made net gains, compared with a 65 per cent showing of minus signs the week previous, there was added yester- day another long array of substantial advances. This not only meant new high record prices for particular issues, but a new high average for the indus- trial group as a whole. Out of 35 industrial stocks in which the trading has been active, individual advances since the middle of last week have ranged from 4 to 45 points, the maximum being in Montgomery Ward. ‘These 35 issues show an average gain in the last four market sessions of ap- proximately 11 points. No such pre- ndicular rise has cccurred in a simi- lar group at any time during the bull market. This leads to the conclusion that after a great deal of distributions of pools between the middle of September and up to October 10 bullish operations by the professional element have been resumed and have so excited- the specu- lative public that it has thrown all restraint to the winds.
