GTZENSPROTES FAE ASEPLA Rhode Island Group Asks Re- fusal of Petition of Trac- tion Companies. Branding the proposed increase in railway and bus fares as “inopportune, tafair, unjust and wholly indefensible at this time,” the Rhode Island Avenue Citizens’ Association at its meeting in the Sherwood Presbyterian Church last night adopted. resolutions requesting that the traction companies’ applica- tion for an increase be refused. Plans for- the annual membership drive of the association to be held dur- ing October were announced by Francis W. Goodman. membership committee chairman. The drive will be inaugu- rated with an organization meeting of the members who are to participate at Sherwood Church Monday night. Ten prizes, including a wheelbarrow. snow shovel, rolling pin and pumpkin, will be distributed to the persons bringing in the most new members at the next meeting, which will be held on Hal- loween night. A letter from a local member of the Democratic national committee asking the association to sponsor the organi- zation of political clubs of both parties ‘was read by Julian F. Belfield, secretary. ‘The citizens, however, directed that a reply be sent stating that it was the consensus among them that partisan politics should not be inserted into the association activities. After considerable discussion the as- sociation voted to ask for immediate action by the Public Utilities Commis- sion on thele request for a street car stop at ™-“#eenth and Rhode Island avenue northeast. Charles I. Stengle, former Reoresen- tative and delegate to the Federation of Citizens’ Associations, addressed the meeting on the importance of organized citizenship as a means of making known the city's needs to Congress, urging the close co-operation of the various associations. Hanly and Lawrence Brady yesterday were named defendan‘s in a_petition filed in Equity Court by the Wardman Corporation, seeking an injunction to prevent the defendants {from levying on property in the Lincoln Hotel, 1620 R street, for the purpose of satisfying certain judgments. Justice Stafford ordered the case put down for a hearing cn October 4 upon agree- ment of counsel. ‘The court is told in the petition, filed by Daniel Thew Wright, that certain of the furniture and equipment in the hotel was purchased from local stores on a conditional sales contract, and that when these stores last year sought to take possession under this contract the Wardman Corporation paid the bills upon agreement that it was to have a first lien on the property. The petition also shows that the defendants, Hanly and Brady, have judgments against the hotel and have undertaken to levy on the property, and that the marshal has levied on the goods and is about to sell them.
