The action of the Capital Traction Co. in asking ‘a higher fare rate be- fore Congress has acted on the pro- posed merger agreement was severely criticised last night by members of the Mid-City Citizens' Association at a meeting in the Thomson School. The opposition of the members to the street car company’s action result- ed in the adoption of a resolution “protesting the granting of any fare increase until after the merger has been fully considered by Congress.” Individual members of the associa- tion charged the company with adopt- ing a “poor policy” and declared that the efforts to secure a higher fare have seriously endangered the chances of effecting the consolidation. Other resolutions asked the grading of K street from First to the District line, the repaving of Eleventh street north of Massachusetts avenue, that better lights be installed on Eighth, N and L streets in the territory covered by the association and that free text books and supplies be furnished stu- dents in the high and junior high schools. A special committee was designated to confer with the traffic_director and the superintendent of police with re- gard to the question of doing away with parking lights on automobiles. Two new members were admitted af, the meeting, which was presided over by A. J. Driscoll. | CELEBRATE BIRTH OF JOHN MARSHALL Sons of Revolution Homor 173d Anniversary by Placing Wreath on Base of Statue. The 173d anniversary of the birth TODAY'S AMUSEMENTS. Jobs.. at at A special report on the program to provide disabled soldiers of the war Government jobs will be formulated shortly after the election by Presi- dent Coolidge’s special committee, ac- cording to Representative Hamilton Fish, chairman of the committee. Different members of the committee, on which are represented Government agencies and service organizations, are making studies of specific angles of the problem, and Mr. Fish believes sub- stantial recommendations can be sub- mitted to the President before Congress opens. Without forecasting what the nature of the proposals will be, Mr. Fish mdi- cated that the program was shaping up into form where some definite rec- ommendations can be made for new legislation concerning changes in the civil service, which will bring into the Government department and bureaus | more of the disabled men of the World | War, who now are looking for work. Mr. Fish is much gratified by the work now under way by his committee. E HAVE THE AMUSEMENTS. AMUSEMENTS. Data Derived From Questionnaires Will Be Compiled for United States. Questionnaires will be submitted to every firm in Washington by local credit men in co-operation with the| United States Department of Com- merce survey of retail credit, which got under way today on a Nation-wide basis. Under the supervision of H. V. Oster- mayer, chairman of the District organ- | | ization of the Association of Retail | Credit Men. and C. M. Keefer, the in- | formation, relating three major sub“ jects in retail credit—cash transactions, | open credit and deferred or install- ment payments—will be compiled and | submitted to the Department of Com-| merce. Other questions will relate to! the monthly balance, collections. bad | debts and the detailed administration of credits. | The survey is being made by the Gov- | ernment at the request of the credit| association, The association cxecutives; were convinced on the basis of their intimate knowledge of credit conditions | that there is a serious lack of reliable information on the subject and, con- sequently, that many of their conclu- sions may be false and even dangerous It was felt this survey should be made by a governmental agency, so that the information would be available on an impartial basis, with the absolute as- surance that the separate returns of firms and individuals will be held strictly confidential. State organizations have been estab- lished in-every State. Ostermayer today said details of the, work in the District are being worked out as quickly as possible and that co- operation of the local credit men is being received in the work.
