NEW YOKK, September 25.—Repre- sentatives of Virginia and Maryland industries told members of the Inter- state Commerce Commission here yes- terday that ocean-rail rates place Eastern shippers at disadvantage with West Coast concerns in competition for | the Southeastern trade. F. R. Bain of the American Peanut | Corporation -of Norfolk, Va., said the | rate from Norfolk to Fort Worth, Tes. | is 5 cents more on a hundred pounds than that from San Francisco, whie Virginia peanuts cost as much to carry from field to factory as do Chinese pea- nuts from China to San Francisco. C. D. Barksdale said the Y4alf-mil- Hon-dollar annual business in South- | western States of the American Hard- ware Co. and subsidiaries of Peters- burg, Va., would be lost under the new rates announced by the commission. | The rates are suspended pending the outcome of the rehearing now under way. 6 Am “Colortype. . 5Am Cyanamid B. 17 Amer Dept Stores. 46 Amer Gas & El.. 1 Amer Gas & E pfd 7Amer Hawalian 8 14 Amer Lt & Trac 3 Amer Nat Gas. il 9 " g 20 Amer Rayon Prod 1 30 Amer Roil Mill... || 98% 88 2t 4 Amer Sol & Chem. 3Amer 8 & C pid. . 13 Amer States Amer 26 Amer 23 Amer_Superp 2 Am Thread pfd 9 Anchor Cap Wi 2 Anchor Cap_pfd wi.. 8 Apponaug Co o 33 Aboy e & Brint. 1 550 Dye & Prin 3 Gas & El.. 5 5 3Uni Biscuit A.... 63 Atl Frult & Sug. NEW YORK, September 25.—Public utilities, oils, mining issues and nu- merous other classes of shares repre. senting prosperous industries today g one of the most impressive displays of strength that has bcen witnessed on the Curb Exchange in many weeks. If the outside public, which has been given credit for the greater part of the unprecedented demand for stocks the past few months, was becoming dis- turbed over the current high level, the action of the market today failed to re- flect any change in sentiment. New high records abounded. In some instances they represented gains of from 1 to more than 10 points. While reports of record earnings, mer- ger prospects and extension of opera- tions were influences working for the rise, the principal basis for the ability of the leaders to move forward was | their technical market position. Phelps Dodge Up. In the case of Phelps Dodge the up- ward movement did not halt until the price had advanced almost 25 points to a new high record. It was a direct response to announcement of the forma- tion of a joint copper-selling agency which will commence its operations Oc- tober, 1 and in which the ccmpany will be a major factor. Sparks Withington at 145 was at a new high and 5 points higher. Hart Parr, above 54, gained more than 11 points to its best, and there were a number of similar upturns in other issues. Utilities and oils were the outstand- ing leaders. Standard of Kentucky at 140 gained almost 9 points to a new high. Standard of Ohio reached its best for present share capitalization 1 and a new top was marked up in Im- perial Oil of Canada. That efforts of leading standard interests toward cur- tailment of production were meeting with more success than at any time during the past two years was indi- cated by the latest report concerning the statistical position of the industry. Utilities Forward. The utilities were thought to be en- titled to a higher market level in view of the strength of shares representing industries where earnings are sched- uled to more violent fluctuations. Elec- tric Bond & Share Securities, one of the most prominent holding organiza- tions, shot forward some 7 points to a new high. American Gas & Electric, above 186, was up over 6 points to its highest. Another wave of buying swept %hruugh the Curb dring the early trad- ng. The oil shares were outstanding fa- vorites. Under leadership of the promi- nent Standard issues the market was responding to reports that an agree- ment to curtail production had been reached by leaders of the Standard companies. Standard of Kentucky ros2 almost 6 points to 137, a new high. Standard of Ohio went to its best at 86, while the Indiana shares were up almost 2 points, The advance of almost 10 points to a new top in Phelps Dodge was a di- rect response to the announcement that this company and Nichols and Calumet & Arizona, along with the Old Do- minion Co., had formed a point cop- per sclling agency and that its opera- tions will commence October 1.
