" It is reported in the financial district that the brokerage firm of W. B. Hibbs & Co. is contemplating taking in two new partners—J. and Karl W. Corby, both widely known residents of Wash- ington. W. B. Hibbs, head of the £irm, and his part- n William W. Spaid, aid today that they could not ennounce the de- tails of fhe move as the matter is still in the negotia- tion stage. They stated, however, tlLat plans for ex- pansion are under consideration and are expec'ed to be completed by the last of the week in W. B. Hibbs. time for the new firm members to| gsume their duties on October 1. W. B. Hibbs, who is known as the dean of Washington brokers, and founder of the brokerage house, is not planning to retire from business. How- ever, he feels that he has earned a rest from part of the responsibilities now devolving upon him, and proposes to fake a liitle more freedom in the future. Miller Addresses Credit Men. #“Commercial crime now ranks among 25 largest industries in the United tates, costing legitimate business more an $1,000,000,000 a year,” Dr. Stephen Miller, executive manager of the Na- nal Association of Credit Men, told embers of the Washington Associa- n of Credit Men at its meeting this oon at the Raleigh. NEW YORK, September 25—Two! distinct movements characterized the trend of prices on the Stock Exchange today. Throughout the forenoon the demand for practically all classes of stocks reached record proportions and carried many issues to the highest at which they have ever sold. Then in the afternoon, without the slightest warning, the market turned abruptly about, more than wiping out the early improvement. Selling was the heaviest witnessed in many weeks and it was almost impossi- ble to trade by the tape. When the ticker indicated that the market was at its height heavy selling orders were being thrown into the early leaders. The tape at one time was more than 40 minutes behind actual transactions on the floor. Steel Carried Down. Such issues as United States Steel, General Motors, Chrysler, many of the coppers, Montgomery Ward and others were carrigd down sharply from their early highs. The renewal rate on call money was again established at 7' per cent, but midway through the aiternoon the rate was aropped to 7 per cent. Before the selling swept over the list in the afternoon, there had been indi- cations of a repetition of Monday's spectacular advance. Inasmuch as the market had paid little attention to recent fluctuations in call money, it was difficult to under- stand why sentiment should have been influenced to any appreciable degree by a drop of 1: per cent in the rate. Nevertheless the market hardened all around in the last hour. Montgomery Ward above 260 com- pared with the previous final of 248%;. International Combustion was at its best price toward the end. A. M. Byers at 125 was up 10 points and Calumet & Arizona led the coppers for an advance of 5 points. Rallying tendencies were still in progress as the session closed. Coppers Strong. No particular group monopolized speculauive attention. The demand was broader than on previous days, and it was_evident that the market was in the hands of a speculative public, keyed to a high pitch of enthusiasm over all that had transpired recently in the campaign for higher prices. As a group the coppers were pre- dominantly strong, with the usual daily new high records marked up in the leaders. Anaconda surged forward to its highest since 1917. Granby Con- i solidated, up some 3 points, sold at its best since 1919, while Kennecott sold at its highest in history. New highs of one form or another also were recorded in Howe Sound, Patino Mines, American Zinc and American Smelting & Refining, but in most instances they represented orily the best for the current movement. They were respond- ing, as they have right along, to the improvement in the price situation and the earnings outlook. The moiors were led by Chrysler, which reached its highest for the pres- ent share capitalization. Willys Over- land, however, shared leadership, ad- vancing to its best above 30 on a huge turnover. 1In its case it was thought to be far behind other motor stocks. Pack- ard reached a new peak, Hudson Motor gained substantially, Chandler issues were in better demand than they had jbeen in many months and Briggs was carried to a fresh peak. Public untilities held a prominent place in the operations for the rise, with Public Service of New Jersey and Con- solidated Gas the favorites. The oils were taken in hand at intervals, reflect- ing successful endeavors on.the part of the leading interests to correct the un- healthy statistical position that has pre- vailed for the last two years in the industry. Barnsdall Corporation “A,” Houston Oil and Texas Corporation were the favorites. Chrysler Featured. Operations for the rise were carried M on aggressively at the outset, with the coppers and motors the outstanding favorites. Chrysler was a feature for the latter group, changing hands initially cn a block of 5,000 shares at a new high for | the present capitalization at 114. Briggs Manufacturing, also opening on a block of 5,000 shares, reached a new top at 57% with the buying said to be for the account of prominent automobile and stock market interests. Hudson, Stude- baker and Timken were other favorites. 0il Co. Sets Record.
