L7 the Associated Press. ! LOS ANGELES, Calif., September 12. ~—Details of Leo P. Kelley's five-year il- licit love affair with Mrs. Myrtle Mellus, society matron, for whose murder he is on trial, were related by the defendant from the witness stand yesterday as his chief argument to save himself from conviction. Declaring himself to have been a “man pursued,” Kelley, a 29-| vear-old meat cutter, told of the clan- destine _meetings which had occurred | “every Sunday but six in the five years” | and at least “two nights a week.” | n Sunday. August 5, when the nude | and mutilated body of Mrs. Mellus was | found in her home, Kelley was captured in a clothes closet. On the stand yes- terday he said he hid there because | Mellus came home unexpectedly and he “thought if I hid there she could let me out of the house later when things quieted down.” Kelley said that when Mrs. Mellus went up to her bedroom the afternoon of the fatal Sunday, he heard her fall on the stairway and that he rushed to her, carried her to her bedroom and that he then fell asleep. Then, he testified, he heard Mrs. Hellus scream “Frank!” after the hus- band had entered the.house and had gone upstairs, and that he heard no more until the police, awakened him in the closet DETENTION HOUSE | PROTESTED AGAIN| New MPctinr;;aVnrn-e;for Tonight to Arouse Neighborhood to Action. Another protest meeting—the third in two weeks—against the new location of the House of Detention will be held to- night at 8 o'clock in the Marvin Meth- odist Episcopal Church, Tenth and B streets southwest. Reiterating the determination of the citizens for whom he speaks to keep the House of Detention out of any residen- tial section of the city, Wimsatt an- nounced today that his group would “Aght the pro-osition from every pos- sible angle and would keep on fighting for 10 years if neeessary.” Meanwhile the work of remodeling the /apartment house has continued under the direction of the Women's Bureau and the four prisoners brought there soon after the Commissioners leased the property remain quartered in_the building.
