VEGETABLE SUPPLY 1S INCREASED HERE iLarge Apple Receipts Are Expected Soon; Canta- loupes Still Plentiful. If it were not for the expo.t market apples could be obtained here at any price, it was stated today by one of the leading wholesale dealers. The very { finest fruit is now available at from $1 to $1.75 a bushel, he pointed out, with a possibility that the price may be even the heaviest apple crops on record be- It is expected that more apples will be exported this year than at any time in the history of the industry. The fruit is of an exceptional quality. | Peaches offered on the local market | are considerably higher than previously. This is due to the fact the Virginia. | West Virginia and Maryland crops are practically exhausted, whereas the New York crop is not yet ready for the mar- ket. Peaches were being quoted to- day at from $2.50 to $2.75 a bushel for firm fruit. . Vegetables of all kinds, with the ex- ception of string beans, lima beans and various varieties of squash, are plenti~ ful and cheap. The string bean crop was practically obliterated by the bean beetle and the wet weather spoiled the local lima bean and squash crop. Cantalopes are still plentiful and are selling at from 90 cents to $1.50 a crate. The quality is good. Grapes are selling at from 50 cents to 60 cents a basket. Meat, butter and egg prices . Market Reacts to Reports on Ca- % nadian Crop. CHICAGO, September 12 (#).—Wheat went down today to within Jg of the lowest. price which the December de- livery here has reached yet this season. ‘The ‘setback resulted chiefly from Ca- nadian government figures, showing the largest crop on record, sufficient to al- low 2,000,000 bushels export every day in the year from North America as a whole. ~ However, ‘the failure of the market to break more severely than it did led to rallies toward the last, and so, likewise, did reports that Russia would be forced to buy foodstuffs on ac- count of near famine in the Ukraine.
