THE EVENING 18] < STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €., THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 1928 HOOVER INDORSED BYNEW YORK SN Supporter of Smith’s Policies | as Governor Prefers G.0.P. Nominee for President. BY DAVID LAWRENCE. @pecial Dispatch to The St \ NEW YORK. August 30—A develop- | ment of no small importance in the | political world hereabouts is the an- nouncement of the New York Sun that 1d support Herbert Hoover for the ally one of the stanchest sap- | President Coolidge for re- the Sun has for several tained & neutral attit as | candidates. The Sun's editorial reads, in part, as | tollo ng the belief that this de- d go to the Republicans the is “S‘.zu v the larger issues and s due regard for | the r and accomplish- | ments of Smith. It has| no sympathy with the contention that | his ability does not measure so high as | his eight vears in the chair have proved the ease which he grasps political prob- lems. Nor doe Sun_take seriously the allegation that Mr. Smith's election | would mean the ‘Tammanyizing' of the | Government; the_appointments which he has made at Albany are proof of the | ollowness of that argument. 'The pic- | ture of the governor in a tiger's skin | may cause in the West and South that | terror which it is meant to inspire, but | the Fast has outgrown such bugaboos. | Hits Tll-natured Criticism. i “Far from joining in the ill-natured eriticism—some open, some whispered— | which has been leveled at Gov. Smith by | 2 like Willlam Allen White | Democrats _innumerable, this | pewspaper believes that in nominating Gov. Smith his party took the omly| step consistent with the political ms~j torv of the last 10 years. Needless | to sav. he is not at the head of & unit- | ed party, for the agitation over prohibi-| tion, while cleaving both parties, has wrought the greater division among the | Democrats. But at least he is bolder, more magnetic and more easily under- || stood than any other living Democrat. | Tt is not the man with whom we find fault, but the history and the policies | of his party and certain views to which, | #s a Democrat. he subscribes and which he seeks to promulgate.” | Reasons for Supporting Hoover. ! The Sun then adds that it bases its | support of Mr. Hoover on thee belief | that there has been prosperity “under Republican administrations and _eco- | fomic depression or disaster under Dem- | ocratic rule.” Stressing the protective tariff and the accomplishments of the Coolidge administration both at home and abroad, the Sun points out that Mr. Hoover “has declared that he will carry out the Coolidge policies,” while Gov. Smith “agrees with his party platform in its hostility to the Mellon plan of taxation and its criticism of the admin- istration’s foreign policy.” In conclusion the Sun says it would be “an unfortunate thing for the United States 1o disturb the economic balance within its borders or to abandon the licles which make it respected on th sides of the globe,” and argues that the long association of Mr. Hoover with Mr. Coolidge “assures his ability to carry out the pledge that he will keep | the ship headed as it heads now.” | Touches on Prohibition Issue. | As to prohibition, the Sun says that while prohibition is a live gn topic it is a question “whether it would | be possible for Mr. Smith, as President, | to obtain the reforms he desires when | his own party in the South and West opposes modification. and whether, in | any event, it would be well to risk the| pessible lose of prosperity for the pos- | sible reform of liquor conditions.” (Copyriwht. 1928) the presidency gove: U.
