SAN FRANCISCO, August 2—Ex- cept for a blaze on the property of the Crown Willamette Paper Co. in the Tahoe Basin, California’s forest fires were belleved under control today after burning over thousands of acres and destroying 31 buildings and some valu- able timber in a 36-hour slege. The Tahoe Basin fire, north of Tahoe City, swept through 800 acres yester- day, burned down 20 buildings, com- prising the paper company’s camp No. 4, and destroyed 10,000 cords of pulp wood. The wind died down sufi- clently for a force of 275 men to check the flames. Forest service officials announced. however, that the embers might be fanned into flame again by even a slight_breeze. A fire in the Feather River country near Paxton swept over 500 acres. Another in the Shasta National Porest, on Coffee Creek, was believed under control, with 75 men_on guard, but the flames were close to heavy tim- ber. The fire started from sparks of steam shovels working on a road. In the Monterey district two fires were smoldering. Because of the increasing fire hazard in the Plumas National Forest officials ordered the district closed to all visitors, except for a small area in the Lakes Basin country. A 12,000-acre fire in the Potter Val- ley district of Mendocino County was brought under control, as was a 15,000~ acre blaze in Madera County. MONTANA FOREST BURNING.
