The general list was heavy and reac- tionary, even some of the stocks that had been strongest on the day before, at the same time the volume did not increase on the decline and it was plain that those working for the advance would not easily abandon their efforts. Uncertainties about the credit situa- tion affected the market. In the first place, it was generally believed that the total of brokers’ loans to be an- nounced after the close would show an increase—how much of an increase not many were willing to predict. Then the reference in the Federal Reserve month- |1y review to an “overloaned” position sounded ominous. From the action of the stock something immediate was evidently in prospect, | Ol stocks generally did better than | other industrials. Outside of Atlantic | Refining there were no large gains, but | | impressive and persistent support. Tt | looked as if the oil shares were at last coming into their own. Coppers Irregular. The strength in the current delivery helped deferred futures, which were moderately higher. Buying by one of the leading com- mission houses disclosed the tight sit- uation in September corn at the start. Prices were up 3 cents before any in- crease in offerings showed. BALTIMORE, August 2.—The Bal- timore & Ohio Railroad is the only car- rier serving the Allegheny region which reports a gain in car loadings for the first two weeks of July. The incren!e; is not large, amounting to only Blfil cars, or 8 per cent, but it is encourag- ing, since it indicates an upward trend in freight movement. The carrinrl handled 119,949 loaded cars during the | first half of July.
