CLIM IS ORDERLY ON STOCK MARKET Rails Given Whirl—Shorts Still Taking Beating in Linseed. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 14—Without in any way letting up on the unfortunate shorts, the stock market settled down today for an orderly advance. There were still rapid fluctuations in the volatile industrials, but the list as a whole seemed to have recovered its poise. The real new development was the uniform strength in the railroad shares, something that had a reassur- ing effect upon shaken speculative nerves. The opening was as uncertain as at any time during the past four days. Radio, the star performer of Tuesday, started in today at 138, down 8 points from the preceding close. Then it gradualiy made up the loss and for a stock that has had such a spectacular career in recent sessions, moved sedately within a range of 2 or 3 points. Linseed Market Sensational. Much more sensational was the market for American Linseed. Here the short interest was hampered, not only by the small floating supply, but by the small capitalization. The open- | ing was 5.000 shares at par, up over 5 points and at the highest in the his- | tory of the company. From the open- ing price it moved up to 105 and held | here. The strength in the rails, which was shared by seasoned dividend payers and low priced issues alike, came as a wel- | come relief. It has been said all along that unless the rails were brought into line the upward movement could hard- | ly be regarded as genuine. They cer- | tainly fell into line today. | New high records since listed were | made by St. Paul common and pre- | ferred, the stocks of the reorganized | companies. The St. Louis-San Francisco | made a high for the year above 116, and so did Texas & Pacific above 112 There was a steady demand for the Missouri Pacific issues. Rock Island moved up in sympathy with “Frisco.” | Lehigh Valley had a rise of nearly 6 points, although it lost part of the gain subsequently. New York, Chicago and St. Louis jumped a point between sales Delaware & Hudson, Lackawanna, Bal- | timore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, with its affiliated Chesapeake corpora- tion, and Union Pacific went along. Industrials Not Prominent. | ‘The only news bearing on the rail-! road situation was the public report that a compromise had been agreed upon the plans for consolidations of the | Eastern trunk lines in the fourth sy tem. The report. which was vague as to details, may have influenced some bu: ing but it was inadequate to account for the upturn in the stocks of all the carriers, both Eastern and Western. The standard industrial General not as prominent, but for the most part showed gains on the day. General Mo- tors was the leader of the three. Inde- pendent Motors were strong also. Hud- son was taken in large blocks up to | 95, where it was at a new 1928 top. | Hupp and Packard were in demand and there was & better market for Dodge | Bros., preferred. | Other industrials which were cou- | spicuous at one time or another was | Vanadium, which soared more than 5 points across 89. International Match preferred, which made a new high since listing at 112; American International which continued its advance of the before, Johns-Manville, Warren Bros and Gold Dust. Baltimore County Bond Issue Bought on 8.85 Per Cent Basis. BALTIMORE, March 14.—Baltimore County received a record price for an Issue of $500.000 of public road 4% per cent serial bonds, awarded by the county commissioners to a banking group, headed by the Union Trust Co. and Jenkins, Whedbee & Poe yesterday. ‘The price was 107.5599 or approxi- mately a 3.85 per cent basis. This com- pares with 10246 or a 4.05 per cent basis, pald for the previous issue of $500.000 of the same loan a year ago. That competition for the bonds was keen is indicated by the fact that less than $2.50 per $1,000 bond separated the highest and the next highest bids. The bonds, which mature serally from 1940 to 1948, were immediately offered for resale by the successful bid- ders on a 3.80 per cent basis. 3—5—10 Houses Apartments JOHN JOY EDSON, President Organized 1879 Assets ... $5,202,042.70 to build 915 F EARNINGE_SHOW SLUMP., | NEW YORK, March 14 () —Earn- ings in 1927 of the American Sugar Refining Co.. were equivalent to $1.49 per share on the commoni stbek, as compared with $7.08 per share in 1926, the report mailed to stockholders today ¢ showed. Earnings on refining operations were $1,070.851, and income from Cuban raw sugar properties and other sources made a total income of $6,618,740. Pro- vision for taxes, depreciation, interest, $7 on preferred and $5 on common stock created a deficit for the year of $1581,240. At the February meeting of the hoard this year the common dividend was ~ omitted on account of inadequate earn- ings and the uncertainty of the sugar outlook due to government control in Cuba, Earl D.
