A. L. Issues Sell Off. Dealings Are Chiefly in Speculative Group. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch 1o The Star. NEW YORK., March 12.—The fact that call money was back to 415 per cent today after loaning at 4'. per cent for a week, did not disturb the investment market as this was antici- sated for the period of a few days while |the March 15 Government financing {1s going through. | Prices for high grade bonds held up in spite of the advance in the money rate, but there was not quite so much activity in them. Dealings were chiefly in the speculative issues. Their moves ments were to some extent predicated on those in stocks. In other cases they indicated a readjustment to price changes last week. The general average of bond prices was not much changed by the day’s transactions. S. A. L. Issues Sell Off. Seaboard Air Line bonds sold off. The adjustments were around 50, compared with last week's high of 55 and the All-Florida €s were under 80. Florida Fast Coast 5s were stronger and have been well bought recently. The St. Paul 5s, in which last week's trading amounted to par value of $10,000,000, were not quite so active though steady. U. S. Rubber 5s and 7!,s, Cuba Cane 7s and North American Cement 6!2s made moderate gains. An expected combination between the North Ameri~ can Cement and the Penn Dixie Cos. has been responsible for the rally of 12 points in the 6'58 of the former cor- Atlantic Gulf and West In- 55 were active around recent prices In the South and Central American bond list there were slight recessions following last week’s big turnover, and new high record prices in many of the bonds of Colombia, Peru, Chile Brazil and Uruguay. The high average re- turn of these bonds has attracted a large amount of investment trust buy- ing. Financing Held Up. ‘This source of support has been re- nsible for a considerable part of their gains. It will in time be demon- strated whether this policy has been a conservative one. In this connection the observation may be made that care- ful selection is required today by the American investor in choosing from among the new foreign dollar bonds be- ing offered to him. Considerable new domestic financing was held up during the recent depres. sion in the stock market. If a buoy ant market for stocks assists in the dis- tribution of bonds there should be a decided expansion in new offerings shortly. SHORT-TERM SECURITIES. (Begorted by J. & W. Seligman & Co.) By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 12.—The cotton market opened steady today at an ad- vance of 1 to 4 points, sold off slightly under offerings probably influenced by relatively easy Liverpool cables, then steadied on reports of dry weather In west Texas and Washington advices in- dicating a large survival of boll weevil at_some Texas points. May contracts sold up to 18.60 and October to 18.19, or about 2 to 6 points net higher, The market was quiet but steady at the end of the first hour. Private cables reported steady mar- ket in Liverpool and that demand for cotton cloths was well sustained with manufacturers and spinners well en- gaged. The forenocon market remained very quiet. Some bullish comment in the international cotton statistics showing a decrease of 189,000 bales in the world’s cotton mill stocks of American cotton for the first half of the season and the absence of rain in West Texas failed to inspire much buying. Prices at midday were holding around 1857 for May, and 1816 for October or about 3 points higher to 1 point lower, as compared with Saturday's close. NEW YORK, March 12.—A merger of Pennsylvania-Dixie Cement Corpora- tion and North American Cement Cor- poration was reportied in Wall Street today to be near completion, announce- ment of the terms being expected in a week. ‘The pending consolidation, is believed in cement circles, it is said, to be a forerunner of a larger unit embracing International Cement Corporation.
