R HARR|§ EwstG- Advent ‘'of Lenten Season Will Curb Gala Program Of Capital’s Society Folk Illness of Mrs. Coolidge Cast Only Shadow Over Brilliant Midwinter Events—Three Cabinet Dinners Yet to Be Civen. I BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. i SH WEDNESDAY will bring to a close—or at least slacken—the | rogram for one of the most overcrowded but brilliant seasons Ennwn here in years. Except for the illness of Mrs. Coolidge, which has caused deep concern and disappointment, especially at the Army-Navy reception at the White House Thursday night, when she was not able to receive, it has been a season with but few interruptions or disappointment: HILE the reception at the W last week closed the official season there, the President and Mrs. Coolidge still have three cabinet dinners ahead, and Tuesday night, if the First Lady of the Land sufficiently recovers, she will join the President at the dinner given in their honor by the Secretary of Agriculture and Mrs. Jardine at the Mayflower Hotel. On the two succeeding weeks they will dine with the Secretary of Commerce and Mrs. Hoover and their last cabinet dinner will be with the Secretary of Labor and Mrs. Davis. ITHE dinner party given by Dr. Work had the Pan-American Union Building for its setting, and the decorations for the table took on «the fancies and conc of St. Valentine, Tuesday being February 14, *and a huge red heart pierced by an arrow occupied the center of the Bpring flower garden in the hollow square of the table CE PRESIDENT and Mrs. Dawes come in for constant entertain- ment, and, for a man who, tradition says, does not like society, Mr. Dawes is certainly a happy, congenial guest. Thursday night Gen. and Mrs. Dawes will be entertained at a reception at the Con- gressional Club, when they will receive the homage of the Senate and House. February 27 they will dine with Representative and Mrs James M. Beck, and March 1 Capt. and Mrs. John R. Edie will give a dinner for them. There are numerous other dinner parties planned in honor of Gen. and X Dawes before March 4 HE Washington Opera Company has brought together a number of distinguished audiences, all of them being most interesting be- number of music lovers attending Tomorrow ht the Ambassador of Italy and Nobil Donna Antoinette de 2 box at Poli’s for the presentation of the Italian ” one of the international festival, and the dor of Great Britain bella Howard will fill their h guests Tuesday nizht ion of the Engl 2.
