TREND DOWNWARD ON CURB EXCHANGE Specialties Gain, but Main Body of Stocks Sags. Deere Bull Feature. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 10.—With tie exception of several volatile high-priced speclalties, the main tendency on the curb exchange today was toward lower levels. Speculative Wall Street appear- ed to be more concerned over the new ak record for brokers' loans than it l‘:;d been several months ago, when the weekly Increases were even larger than that recorded after the close Thursday in_the Federal Reserve statement. ‘The oil shares in most instances were down only fractionally, but their action indicated that they were still vulnerable to adverse conditions in the industry. Standard Oils Offered. Standard of Indiana and Vacuum Ol were freely offered at intervals, and others of the group moved sympathetic- ally. Public Utilities resisted the offer- ings better than most groups, with United Gas & Improvement a note- worthy strong spot advancing well over 2 points. The motors were practically neglected while the mining shares lost a good deal of the buoyancy that was characteristic of the group in recent sessions. Decre common was one of the out- standing feature among the high- priced industrials, rising almost 20 points before the demand was supplied. With preferred accumulations now paid up and the common on a regular an- nual $6 dividend basis, buyers were discounting the prospects of increased distributions. Safety Stores in Demand. Safety Stores responded to the re- ported increase of 38 per cent in Jan- uary sales, but there was evidently something more than an increased sales volume back of the demand. The re- cent improvement in Bohn Aluminum and Brass had been sufficient to dis- count the increase in net profit for 1927. Net for the year amounted to $1,181,606 after all charges and taxes, compared with $873,744 in 1926. Becausg of the various reports con- cerning Bancitaly Corporation interest naturally centered in the action of this stock. President Giannini was reluctant to comment on the rumor that negotia- tions are in progress for the consolida- tion of Bancitaly with prominent New ‘York banking interests, but many years disposed to place credence in reports to this effect. The price was several points lower most of the session, as a result of profit-taking following the re- cent sharp upturn.
