BT oo R P i e TDAY, FERRU ARY 10, 1928, RADID PATENT ROW HOLDS SPOTLIGHT Industry’s Quick Growth Toid as Claims of “Trust” Are Heard. Battle lines are being drawn in con- gressional committee rooms for another struggle relating to radio. It involves the alleged pooling of patents by certain large radio interests to form what is at- tacked as a giant monopoly in violation of the anti-trust laws. The hearing opened by the Senate patents commit- ngs to Con: * attention, and that of the country, the story of the mushroom growth of the whole radio in- dustry, Senator Dill's object being to n enactment of a law providing for sture of patent rights in cases of jon under the laws prohibiting manopoly Quite separate from the broadcasting problem, involving some broad- casting features. the patent hearing i leading into ramifications. Charge have freely been made that a monopoly or group is controlling the radio Indus! The Radio Protective Associa- tion, 8 Chicago organization of inde- pendent radio manufacturers, proposes to prove the charges. Bucking $3,000,000,000. The target of its fight and avowedly the Radio Am a, which the Ch tio: executive . secret; Schuette, described as bein operating in Testraint of trade backed by the $3.000,000.000 combined resources of the American Telephone & Telegrapi Co.. the General Electric Co., the West- inghouse Co. and the United Fruit Co. Its own assets were said to be more than $60.000.000. Ernest Reichman, _the dissentient manufacturers’ counsel, told the Sena- tors that the R. C. A. has absorbed all of the patents represented by the work in the research laboratories of the fore- going companies and many other inde- pendently held patents besides. Through & system of patent pooling and restric- tions upon the use of the patents licensed under royalties to smaller manu- facturers the R. C. A. was alleged to have fastened & firm grip on the whole radio industry. Claims Tube Monopoly. Tubes represent perhaps $70,000,000 worth of business a vear, and by this restriction Mr. Reichman claims R.C. A. 1s retaining 90 per cent of that business to itself, squeezing out the smaller man- ufacturers of tubes. Clause 9, the “tube clause” of the patent licensetagreements with the 25 manufacturers, was the subject of an injunction obtained this week in the United States District Court at Wilmington, Del., where Judge Morris held it invalid in violation of the Clay- ton act. This injunction is certain to precipitate a stiff battle in the courts. Eleven members comprise the group which is waging the war against the ‘monopoly, the board of directors being named for the first time at the Benate hearings as follws: Harry G. Sparks, Sparks-Worthington Co., Jack- son, Mich.: J. Wiechers, Western Coil & Electric Co., Racine, Wis.; Fred Arm- strong, Mellotron Tube Corporation, Chicago; Harry Chirelstein, Sonatron Tube Co.. Chicago; Louis Mandel, Metro- Electric Co.. Chicago; Roy Augustine, Joy-Kelsey Co., Chicago; Duane Wana- maker, Grigsby-Grunow-Hinds Co., Chi- cago; Ernest Kauer, C-E Manufacturing Co., New Haven, Conn.; Alexander Weiss, Marti Electric Co, Newark; Arthur C. Lord, De Forest Radio Cor- poration, Newark, and H. R. Rose, | Shamepck Elecrtic Co., Newark. | Edwin Callow, otherwise known as| “Tony the Barber,” who has been broadcasting and writing & newspaper column for some years, will return to the radio arena this evening through WRHF. While “Tony,” in his chosen profes- sion can give a good shave and soap out of the ear, he also can the ear with last minute news over what he describes as the “louda speak’.” This evening, however, he plans to tell the public what he thinks of some of the recent visitors in his shop. Among them are George Walson, president of the Liberty National Bank; Leon Ull- man, Isaac Gans, Joseph McReynolds, ©O. J. DeMoil, Maurice Bird and Harry Hahn, He will make his appearance betore the microphone at 6:20 o'clock. WRHP's other attractions include the tri-weekly children’s period, “The Land of Nod” conducted by Miss Evelyn Reichard and Miss Edna Burrows, a resume of municipal government af- fairs, and & dinner concert.
