BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispateh to Tho Star. NEW YORE, February 10.—The main body of stocks: stood up fairly well to- day in the face of the increase in brokers' loans to a new high record. There were intervals when selling was pronounced in certain directions, but concerted efforts to steady the market in the end were successful. Many issues left off lower on the day, but heavy covering in the last half hour carrfed a number if industrials back over more than the ground lost. United States Steel had to absorb heavy offer- ings and ended lower. Genecral Mo- l.(l;rs was practically unchanged at the close. ‘The latest Federal Reserve Bank statement disclosed that the institution was adhering to the policy of liquidating Government securities in an endeavor to check unwarranted speculation in the stock market. Cash on Hand Gratifying. It had not been expected that the General Motors directors at their meet- ing after the close yesterday would do anything more than declare the regular quarterly dividend and this was re- flected in the action of the stock throughout the session. Nevertheless, the disclosure in the statement that s | current cash on hand approximated $170,000,000 at a time when the cor- poration was entering its heaviest pro- duction season was gratifying to those contending that larger _distributions can be expected later in the year. - Efforts to bring about higher prices for Chrysler based on the revival of the time-worn merger gossip were not meet- ing with the success they had yesterday. Studebaker, retraced part of the amount deducted from the price. When the late favorites showed signs of wavering, concerted attempts to bring about higher prices were set forth in the copper group and they were not without success. It was dif- flcult to see any change in the market for the metal to warrant higher prices &":renliz:?ed s"f;:s. befiv}de;lly operations s n belief t| 3 weze behind solhel’ gmup:." ey merican Smelting at 180 gained al- most 4 points. It was not until after midday that the unfilled tonnage statement as of January 31 was made public. Es- timates as to what this would disclose ranged from an increase of 300,000 to 400,000 tons. The exact amount of the increase amounted to 303,073 tons. The market for Steel common was little affected, inasmuch as the showing was about n line with expectations. The highly "vulnerable Vanadium Corpora- tion fluctuated over a wide range, but with a tendency toward lower levels. The rubber stocks continued to be in- fluenced by the rather drastic break in crude rubber markets, both here and abroad. This naturally must have its eflect upon company inventories, and this is what the market for such stocks as United States Rubber, down 2 points; Goodrich, off 4 points at one time, and others of the group were reflecting. NEW YORK, February 10.—Improve- ment in business and industrial activity is being strikingly measured today by the increased loads carried by the public utility companies throughout the coun- try. Sale of electric power now has risen to a point nearly 10 per cent high- er-than was recorded at this time last ear. 4 A certain portion of this gain is re- sulting from the electrification of plants which used other sources of power a year agn, but the main portion comes from increased activity of old subscrib- ers. The cost of producing electric cur- rent is showing a slight drop owing to the favorable position of the central sta- tion operators in coal and oil fuel. The advance in the amount of natural and artificlal gas consumed has been even more striking. New pipe lines have found their capacity taxed by the needs of industrial and domestic ciients. The weather has been more favorable for the use of gas this year than last, and the adoption of gas as a fuel for industrial heating has caused a big advance in the | amount consumed. | Service Shows Increase. | The telephone service provided in vari- | sections 1s regarded as an accurate | measure of business activity. This serv- | ice in some sections shows an increase | above 10 per cent, as compared Wwith| February, 1927, | Bullding activity is not any more | strongly marked than a week ago, but the unusual strength of the real estate markets of the country indicates that | building programs comparing most “'i vorably with 1926 and 1927 will be put into effect this year. ‘The steel mills continue to show de- cided improvement. Prices are very firm for most products and an unusual demand 1is expected to come from the rural districts for wire, nails and sim- ilar products. Employment continues to grow in the | automobile factories, but the industry | as a whol: is far {rom being at the peak of capacity production, which many companies hope to reach this| year. Sufficient cars, however, are be- | ing turned out to improve materially | the position of the automobile acces-| sorles producers; to keep the tire fac- - | torles working at a high rate of speed, | . and to influence the situation in some’ — of the textile lines. | The sharp drop in crude rubber, fol- | lowing disorganization in the London | rubber market, offered encouragement to the tire manufacturers. | Comparatively little change took place | i th2 non-ferrous metals situation. The | danger of overproduction in silver. | | lead. zinc and copper still hapgs heav- ily over the situation. Ther€ are scat- tered indications that tin prices will ad- vance in the rot distant future. Coal and Oil Situation. | Coal showed no improvement, and the | situation of the petroleum producers. | refiners and distributers is little changed. The arrival of a representa- | tive of the Dutch Shell interests seems | to have been faken, in general as an effort to settle the dispute with the | Standard Oil Co. of New York as to markets in the Far East. But market commentators in general seem to have overlooked the fact that the Dutch Shell interests are tremendous Ppro. ducers in this country. and that they | have been adversely affected by the sit- $ uation here to an even greater extent | than some of the local oil concerns. | Improvement is being shown in the | silk industry. although the situation still | is subject to fluctuations owing to the fact that mills can produce at any time far more goods than can be sold. | | The shoe companies are reporting | gains in both sales and profits. | | "'In the textile field. the specialties | |are the things that are making the money, not the standard goods. | The situation of the sugar industry | was brought to the front by the passing | of its dividend by the American Sugar | ‘| Refining Co. However, it is declared .| by many sugar experts that the cause back of this move was not so much re- striction in Cuba. or invasion of East- ern markets by Western producers, as i it was the inherent faults in the mar- keting situation, which the sugar in- stitute has just been organized to ob- viate. HAS FAVORABLE BALANCE.
