Gaillard in the thr rocky ridge had been completed, he and his men were to experience heart- breaking and back-bending setbacks. Farly calculations had determined that approximately 53,000,000 cubic yards of material would have to be dug out of and removed from what was first known as “Culebra Cut.” When the shovels dug into the vitals of nature, however, landslides that were actually more like vast earth glaciers, covering at one time as many as 75 acres and again heaving an area of 47 acres of rock and earth into the ditch, laboriously dug, set awry the plans. The original plans called for a cut that was 670 feet acyss its top at a glven point. and throvyh the 26 slides and the series of upheavals of the bot- tom of the ditch itself. the cut today is 1,800 feet scross. Instead of the original yardage of material, approxi- mately 105,000,000 cubic yards were caten from Culebra before its wound could be concreted and flooded to serve the men who gashed it. Culebra cut, which is nine m long and of an average depth of { feet, while at places its walls of moun- ta rise 500 feet above the channel }Ix tom, was designated as “Galllard Cut” by order of President Wilson, who | deemed it just that the engineer be |riven his proper recognition. And so, |in further honor to the man whose |genius contributed so much to the completion of the gorge, the memorial tablet was unveiled yesterday. Col. Gaillard entered the United States Military Academy in 1884 and he was graduated with such grades that he was promptly appointed an officer in the Engineer Corps.
