Sitting in a chalr with a gas tube close to his moath, the lifeless body | of John Hoffman, about 65 yvears old, said to be a retired Army officer, was found this morning in his room at L street by his landlady, ®rs, Alice Harrison. Mrs. Harrison sald that Mr. Hofr- man had lived a life of a recluse and had complained frequently of Il health. Yesterday he gave up his room, which he had occupled for about a year, and went to another rooming [ house at 1108 M street. There he in- dicated to’the landlady, Mrs. J. Con- nell, that he contemplated taking his life, but left the house after he had been told that a pipe in his room was a water pipe and that the room was not equipped with gas. Davis of the second precinet, who notified Emergency Hospital and the coroner. Dr. Samuel S. Adler of the Emergency staff stated that Mr. Hoffman had been dead probably for several hours.
