MERGING OF POWER UNITS HELD NEEDED Huge Steam Plants Being Built Up to Assure Con- tinuily of Service. BY J. C. ROYLE, Special Dispatch to The Star. | NEW YORK, December 30.—Steam generated power now accounts for about 6623 per cent of the electric current produced and consumed in America and will continuo to do so despito tho tremendous water-power facllittes still remaining undeveloped in the country. This was the prediction made today by men in closest possible touch with the utility corporations of America and their future plans, in outlining the possibilities for expan- sion in 1928, At the moment_thero seems to be | few, it any, really big important public utility mergers in prospect, especially throughout the great industrial sec- tion of the Middle West. The trend which Is plafnly evident, however, is toward the consolidation by the big companies of the small local plants and the absorption of the latter into superpower systems which are exten- sively interconneeted. The local and municipal utility plants age constant :ing welded into the systems of the < producers, Concentration of Capacity. ‘This is a move along the line of con- centration of generating capacity and the development of transmission lines which tie up large districts for service from central generating systems. Mu- ricipalities have discovered that it is far more dangerous to safety of life and property for the electric wires to fail to deliver their current than a complete breakdown of the police and fire-fighting forces. Consequently every effort is being made to guard against such contingencies. Tremendous preducing units are %eing built and are being connected in such a way that the failure of any local plant will be counteracted by production of current from the con- necting systems. Such plants are now under construction at Beacon, 1Il, where the eventual capacity will be v | 2,000,000 horsepower at Keokuk, Iowa; . Louis, and at Peoria, IIl. attitude of the industry toward this important move for the building up of superpower systems for electric current distribution is expressed thus by Samuel Insull, one of the promi- nent leaders of the industry: “Interconnection, ‘superpower,’ group management, all the rest of it, have followed low-cost steam . generation and distance transmission as natural- ly as day follows dawn,” he said. Water Found Problem. | For a time there was a great deal of talk about locating superpower plants at the mines, but a terrific vol- ume of water is needed for condensa- tion purposes for such a plant, and this is seldom available close to the mining properties. Now the generat- ing units are usually being built at a point where there are good rail con- nections and which at the same time is located near adequate water sup- plies and adjacent to heavy consumers of current. In outlining his idea of the super- power plan, Mr. Insull said: “First, communities to be served are grouped into electricity supply systems, with centralized production {and operation. systems are | then interconnect ¥ h_tension | transmission lines. Frequently, still larger central stations are built to supply current to the interconnected vstems. Thus the positive economies | of centralized operation for community | groups are duplicated in system £roups, or superpower systems. The only real difference between the | ‘superpower’ systems and the smaller community group systems, is the dif- | terence in_ the size of the figures re- quired to describe them.” [ Absorption of Small Firms. | There are now about 125,000 miles .| of high tension transmission lines in the United States, with voltage rang- & from 11,000 to over 200,000, About {325,000 farms are now being given central station service. *|""So marked is the tendency toward | the absorption of the smaller utility | concerns that such companies are be- | ing tempted by high offers in all sec- tions of the tountry. Leading utility | men say it is often economically justl- 1' able ta pay apparently too mach for | some of the properties to be grouped. | When properties are necessary to | round out and complete a group situ- | ation, the price paid for them, it any- | where within reason, is relatively un- | important. Public utility men say this general | consolidation, “which is bringing the | little companies into the big concerns, | wiil continue until good electric serv- | ice 1s practically universal throughout | the United States.
