ALLY GAWTREY had the age where a woman can do as she pleases providing she does nothing out of the usual. Life had taught her a thing or two; she had had a few smart slaps from fate, and even now certain memories of disaster and death continued sharp at times. But at least she had arrived at the point where she could be sensi- ble and pick up any little joy that ®might come her way. Just lately, too, a bit of good for tune had befallen her. An almost un- known relative had left her a few thousands, which enabled her to take a long rest, be independent of work and her married sister—who, by the way, could not understand Sally’s not manrying—and get for herself a few of the things her soul had always han- kered for. Books, for instance, and a little trip now and then. So it was that she came to go to the city alone. Her sister Anna, Mrs. Swartout, had intended to go, but at the last moment had been unable to because her husband’s mother ws com- ing to spend the day. “You are sure you can go without me?” she asked, and Sally had smiled her little smile of patience and cour- tesy. Yet all the 60 miles to town she won- dered if she had not been overconfi- dent. She had never been to the city alone in all the 40 years she had lived. Of course, she knew how to find her way about, and when she had walked to the first department store and per- formed a series of commissions for her sister and the neighbors she decided to take half an hour before lunch peeping at things she herself wanted to see. Hats, for instance. Sally loved hats, but up to this point she had hardly ever had any except black or brown. She was wearing brown now, a little old shape Anna had trimmed for her, and it made her, as she well kne look muddy. Not that that mattere She was peeping into the fascinat- ing windows of a hat shop when a woman who was bending to take a hat from the window saw her and beck- oned. Sally went in. “Well, it does seem good to see some- body from home,” Grace Wilcox said. “Can you wait round a moment, Sally? She was sur- prised to see Grace Wilcox selling hats. She wondered how it had come about. Presently when the customer had gone Grace told her. “I got so tired of hosiery and they wanted me here. You see, I sell hats because I can year ’em. Look here!"” She snatched a flame-colored hat from the showcase and deftly donned it. “Here, you try it on, Sally,” she said. Sally obeyed. “Gioodness!” breathed Grace Wilcox, “That hat was made for you.” Sally looked into a mirror and gasped at the swift transformation. Her graying hair was hidden, her dark eyes became brilliant, her cheeks glowed. It was daring but charming. “Why haven't you ever worn red?” Grace demanded. PROPOSALS. R BT Ay re; et WaRnngton. Indeed for half an instant she almost thought she was gazing at another woman, a good- looking woman, too, who had hand- some dark eyes and just natural color enough and who had a youthful figure topped by a radiant hat. Then she remembered and with discreet amusement recognized her old black suit, which she herself pressed the day before on Anna's ironing board. She sat down at the table Grace selected, feeling generally on the best of terms with herself. “This is my treat,” she said. *“No! You won't, Grace! I expected to be lonesome today and you are helping me out nicely. And to think what you have just done to my head.” She laughed again. “We'll take the regu- lar luncheon,” she said to the waitress. The regular luncheon was a_ dollar each and Sally had expected to lugch on a sandwich and a cup of tea, but she suddenly felt expensive and gen- erous. “Now tell me about yourself,” she hegan. And Grace told her all there was to tell, how she enjoyed her ‘work and had some good times. Sally in- terpreted reservations. T'll never go back to live agal Grace said, “but I love it all the same. What's going on? Has Dave Spaulding made up h“lf mind yet whom he’s going to marry? Sally studied the forkful of salad she was lifting and made that an ex- cuse for merely shaking her head. , “If he don't hurry up he'll never get married,” Grace said. “He Is get- ting on—42. When a man reaches that age he gets so self-opinionated that nobody will have him. Dav ‘i rich and good-looking and smart. He'd make a dandy husband—that is, " if he doesn't wait too long.” Sally lifted her eyes. “If you think all tha of him why didn’t you have him?” she asked. Yes! She did it just like that, quietly, not as if she had always been bym’ng to know the truth about Grace's leav- ing town and Dave staying qnglc.
