BU[]K OF PRAYER REVISION REJECTED ° i House of Commons Refuses| Assent to Changes Proposed | I* by British Churchmen. Br the Associated Press. The next step will be to return the | measure to the church assembly. The | assembly will reconsider the revision and may present it to Parliament in | an amended form | Volce of Protestantism. | The excited cheering of the oppo- ents of the revised book which burst forth in Commons when it was an.| nounced fhat the bill had been de feated was in part at least a mani festation of the deeply ingrained | Protestantism of a large portion of the British nation. It was also a manifestation of their strong dissent from what they regard as Romanizing tendencids, for which, in their opinion, | the bill opened the way. Although Premier Baldwin recom- | mended its adoption, the issue was not | political and there’ was much ecross | voting. Representatives of rival par- ties found themselves of the same view on this question when the vote was taken. | When the discussion hegan in Com- mons and during its early progress al- most everybody expected that the House would indorse the opinion of the bishops and the decision of the House | of Lords. As the evening advanced, the oratory of the opponents of the bill began to tell, especially upon | members who were regarded as open- | minded for various reasons. Archbishop Shows Deep Feeling. Possibly the man who had the least hope as the dehate advanced was the Archbishop of Canterbury. He had | silently followed the proceedings from | the gallery and as a spectator m =ht have been able to guage better the strength of the opposition. When the result was announced, the aged prelate slowly left the gallery, manifesting | deep disappointment over the destruc- tion of his hopes. He was accom- panied by the Archbishop of York and leaning on his arm received the re- spectful sympathy from those | who saw the distress he was unable | to conceal. It has been 265 vears since any bill affecting the praver book has heen discussed in Parliament. Churchmen bave hitherto adhered unalterably to | the book authorized in 1662. Some of the Changes Proposed. One of the principal changes which brought debate was the reservation of the sacrament. The revised prayer book would have permitted the setting aside of the bread and wine consecrated at open com- munion for those who were sick or near death. - The form now in use forbids the carrying of elements consecrated at open communion out of the church THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D.
