C"—- ———— FROGRFSS CLAIMED | ; it WAR ON CANGER Medical Science at Last on Right Track, Therapy Group Told. 87 the Associated Press. CHICAGO, November 1.—Dr. Fran- ols Carter Wood, director of the In- m\nu of Cancer Research, Columbia versity, believes medical science at last is on the right track in its fight #gainst cancer. ‘He addressed the annual meeting of the American College of Physical Therapy, held in connection with the dedication program of the University of Chicago’s new medical laboratories. Dr. Wood said that while several serums have been used in the treat- ment of cancer, and that while none had proved a success, they have indi- Olf that science is getting closer to a successful treatment of the dis- ease. Cancer is not spreading, despite a general epinion that it is, he said, ex- plaining that science has made such strides in the conquest of other dis- eases that the apparent non-progress against cancer makes it stand out unfavcrably in comparison with the other advancement. Dr. Wood pointed out that search for the cause and a cure of cancer has occupied the thoughts of many generations from the time of the an- cient Egyptians and Greeks to the present. Another speaker, Dr. George A. ‘Weymouth of New York, said that the cancer sufferer’s chief hope lay in surgery because radium was too un- certaln, Describing the stubborn resistance of the disease to medical efforts, Dr. ‘Weymouth said: “Sixty-one per cent of the cases of cancer of the tongue are inoperable. For growth too ex- tensive for surgery, diathermy, a deep, penetrating electrical heat, of- fers the best prospect. In this meth- od, ths uendotherm. or so-called ‘radio used.
