LOST FOSSIL DEPOSIT UNCOVERED IN UTAH| 50-Year Search Ends as Smith- sonian Receives Collection of Trilobites. proved Order of Re of Pocahontas wpolice and fire The hunt for a fossil deposit in the mountains of Utah, lost for 50 years, has come to an end with the receipt by the Smithsonian Institution of a collection of foss trilobites from Frank Beckwith of Delta, Utah. One of the pioneer geological surveys which opened up the West a half cen- tury and more azo discovered in the House Range of Utah a deposit of ex- cellently preserved fossil trilobites. ‘These collections are all now in the Smithsonian Institution. In later years, Dr. Charles D. Wal- eott, late secretary of the Smithson- fan. revisited the region and tried to find more material. but never suc- ceeded in locating the spot. He had earth at a much earlier geological pe- riod than had been supposed, and the trilobites furmshed his principal evi- dence. These were a shelled in verte- brate animal. whose closest living rel- ative is the brine shrimp now found in great abundance in the Great Sait Lake and the Dead Sea. The trilobites. however, though they were the domi- | § nant life of the sea several hundred million years ago, completely disap. peared about the time the ‘coal deposits of the Eastern United States were laid down.
