REAL ESTATE. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON. D. C, SATURDAY, Cuffed Short Socks for Sports BY MARY MARS Certainly the effect is not grace ful but it 1s undoubtedly smart -and more than that, it is sportsmanly, or perhaps | should say sportswomanly the effect produced by wearing short woolen socks over the usual long stockinks for tennis golf and Winter sporta t at present these cuffed short socks are displayed rather prom | tnently at most of the stoc PLAY- NIS OR IN- TER SPORTS RT WOOL and if you go in for outdoor s at all one pair at least should be included in your late Autumn pur- chases, One wonders what will be the effect on stocking fashions of the slight lengthening of skirts that is every where apparent. Will women go back to the trick of roling their stockings below the knee? This fashion prac- ALL. was a real fashion—-with the extreme ibbreviation of skirts. They wear old frocks as long as they are wearable in the original guise and then pack them off to the next rummage sale. Really it {s worth while to learn how to make over your own clothe: To be able to do this frequently means four evening frocks instead of two, or six possible afternoon frocks instead of three. But often there is not enough good in the old frock to make Then new material | e used to ek than use a near match it to get material of an entirely d color or shade and then frankly a bi-colored or composite frock. make Recently I saw a charming frock made of two distinct colors. The ma- terial was joined together by means of fagoting. If you are intereste] in this problem of making your own frocks at home, send me a stamped, self addressed envelope and I will send ou a sketch of the frock with di: am and instructions for the fag- tically disappeared—if indeed it ever oting. * (Cooyright. 1027.) MILADY BEAUTIFUL BY_LOIS LEEDS. Hip-Reducing Exercise. Dear Miss Leeds: (1) My hips are extremely large for my age and size and I would like to reduce them. I am 19 years old and weigh 118 pounds. (2) My hair is brown and very curly. For a day or so after washing it is a light brown, but becomes dark soon. I want it light to contrast with my dark brown eyes, and yet I do not want to bleach it with peroxide, as that is barmful to the hair. Can you suggest a mild, harmiess bleach for it? CURLY Answer—(1) You forgot to state your height, so that I cannot judge whether or not you are too heavy. If you are five feet one or two inches tall, your weight is correct. Unless your hips measure more than 36 inches and you are very short in stature, they are not too wide. Many girls nowadays want to have straight hipless figures, like a boy, but Mother Nature makes the widest part of the feminine figure at the hips. It will do you no harm, however, to do exercises for making the muscles of the hips firm. Rolling exercises are good for the purpose. Place a padded quilt or thin mattress on the floor and lie on it on your right side. Keeping your back and knee straight, swing the left leg forward as far as you can and touch the floor with your pointed toe. Now swing the leg back. Repeat the for- ward and backward swings, letting your body roll on the right hip. Turn over and repeat on the other side. You will find other hip-reducing exer- cises in my leaflet, “Beauty Exer- cises,” which I shall be glad to send you on receipt of a stamped, self-ad- dressed envelope. (2) In my opinion you are foolish to want to bleach your pretty, curly brown hair. Dark hair and eyes are just as attractive as dark eyes and light hair. If you do bleach the ends you will find that the hair keeps on growing out dark at the roots so that you will have to have it retouched regularly near the scalp. ‘The only thing I would recommend in » your case is a mild lemon or henna rinse. They are used as final rinses after your shampoo. To make the lemon, mix one tablespoonful of strained lemon juice in one quart of water. The henna rinse that brings out the bronze lights in dark hair is made by brewing two ounces of dried henna leaves in one quart of boiling water. Let the mixture stand until cool and then strain it. Dilute the mixture with water if you want it lighter in shade. LOIS LEEDS. Young Man's Hair Problem. Dear Miss Leeds: (1) I am a young gellow in the early 20s. I have dark hair that always looks dirty or as though there was soap on it. It does not lie down as it should. (2) I have been in town for ten months and ha got acquainted with a few girls, but I would like to know more of them bo- cause I am lonesome. What would not available, however, you may use a lemon rinse after the shampoo. ‘Wash your hair every two weeks with a liquid shampoo, rinse it well in warm water, then rinse it again in about a quart of cool water to which you have added a tablespoonful of strained lemon juice. This will make your hair soft and clean. Dry your hair by rubbing it with a Turkish towel. Now spray some brilliantine on your hair with an_ atomizer and comb it into place. This will give it a well-groomed appearance. Mas- sage your scalp for at least ten minutes every day. See that your brushes and comb are always ciean and free from dust; wash "hem twice a week.
