Condemned Hymn Was Set to Music by Chicagoan. | CHICAGO, October (#). — The hymn, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,” forbidden at funerals by Cardinal | O'Connell, Archbishop of the Roman | Catholic Diocese of Boston, was writ- ten by a deeply religious woman, who was the wife of a_minister. J. S. Fearis of Chicago, who wrote the music for words he. purchased from Mrs. Jessie B. Musician’s Statement. “I had in mind merely the writing of a suitable melod; Mr Fearis said when asked what influence had dom- inated when, he get the words to music. He recalled that the verses were among a number his hymn publishing business of tnat'day purchased from Mrs. " the only one which be- came popular.” he said. It was thirty years ago that the hymn was copyrighted, but that it still is popular was attested by the Forester Music Company of Chicago, publishers and holders of the copy- right. Royalties still are paid to the estate of John G. Pounds through the Citizens’ Bank of Miami, Fla. “Vulgar,” “trashy,” and ‘“inane” were adjectives applied by Cardinal O'Connell who placed the hymn among several English compositions “by people who have no faith but plenty of maudlin sentiment.” “I never regarded it as maudlin and its popularity attests its worth,” said Mr. Fearis. “It does picture Heaven as vague, but who of us can give it any more definiteness?” Wilson Condemned. Mr. Fearis recalled also that several years ago while the late President Woodrow Wilson was president of Princeton University he stirred up a discussion by declaring the hymn was not_appropriate. “That made good business,” chuckled Mr. Fearis. Mr. Féaris added that a few years #go a Boston newspaper devoted a whole page to the hymn, some of the comments severely critical. TUpon another occasion, after the Aymn had been sung at a funeral, a father related to him that his son had sent back a message from the spirit world saying that the singing of the hymn had been beautiful. The “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere"” has been very popular in Chicago. It recently was played at the funeral of J. Ogden Armour, the deceased packer having left such a request‘ INCREASED EFFICIENCY FOR ARMY BANDS IS AIM @tandard Strength of 26 Musicians Is Authorised by War Depart- _ ment October 15.
