However, ‘there were others which continued their gains, so the general the list was not much changed tructive efforts being made in the local traction situation have changed the market aspect of all the members of this group. NEW YORK, October 6.—Through- out the first half session on the Curb Fxchange today operations for the Little at- tempt was made to fight the advance, although in the afternoon the desire to take on new commitments was not as urgent. Many believed that the market had definitely entered the dan- and they were reluctant to rranted. One incident that attracted atten- tion the action of Bancitaly Cor- poration shares. Heavy selling at the outset ied the price down more than twe points. Before offerings had heen absorbed the price recorded a loss of more than six points on the day. Support was encountered at the low level and the price rallied several points, Sp Warning by Official. The desire to liquidate was a di- rect response to the words of warn- ing of the executive vice president of the corporation. He characterized as unwarranted the recent speculation in the issue and called the attention of the investing public to the danger in- volved. He intimated that should the stock continne as closely held as at present, it is likely to be removed from trading by the Curb Market. e added that such action would have the approval of directors of the corpora- tion. Another spectacular upturn oc- curred in Johns Manville shares. They were bid up some two points further today on a heavy turnover. Having the support of the strongest banking interests in the State, it was not a difficult matter for the professional speculative element to bid the price up, especially in view of the fact that the stock thought to be closely held. A rise from the low of 55 to the cur- rent quotation of 121 in less than a vear has caused considerable comment amcng the more conservative ele- ment. See Rauk Speculation. Close students of market pyro- technics characterized the present operations in industrial favorites as the rankest sort of speculation, while those disposed to increase their hold- ings were equally emphatic that con- ditions affecting the movement of stock prices and developments pending and prospective within the companies themselves warranted higher prices. Stutz Motor was taken up and given a whirl. The oils were more active, but with the price tendency irregular and confined to narrow limits by com- parison with other industrials. Public utilities fluctuated uncertainly and the rails were less prominent on the side of rising prices. . CORN SCORES GAINS AS WHEAT DECLINES Predictions of $1 December Deliv- ery Have Bullish Effect on Coarse Grain in Chicago Today. By the Associated Press, CHICAGO, October strength in the corn market developed early today, whereas wheat tended lower. Buying of corn was largely based on predictions current in some quarters that December delivery of corn would soon be selling at $1 a bushel. Starting unchanged to % off, corn later scored gains all around. Wheat also started unchanged to % off and subsequently showed a general sag, with selling from the Northwest. Oats held steady. Provisions were h a statement today that ituation has been completely reversed in the last six weeks. He sald that under present conditions there is a big profit in feeding and that corn may also he employed profit- ably through industrial ~channels, whereas six weeks ago there was not 1t was also cited that December contracts are now based on delivery of number 2 corn and that lower grades are no longer deliverable. Large receipts of wheat northwest despite unfavorable weather had a bearish effect on the wheat market. Arrivals of wheat at Minneapolis and Duluth today were respectively 891 and 674 against a total of only 408 cars a year ago. Winnipeg ar- rivals today were also large, exceeding both last week's figures and those of a year ago. the corn CHICAGO LIVE STOCK MARKET CHICAGO, October 6 (United States Department of Agriculture).—Iogs— Receipts, 23,000 head; early market steady to 10 higher: most advance on good and choice butchers 220 pounds up; top, 11.85; bulk, good to choice, 170 to 200 pounds, 11.10a11.60; 210 to 240 pounds, 11.50a11.80; 250 to 32! pounds, 11.15a11.75; most packing sows, 5210.15; big packers now talk- ing lower on packing grades and light light; most 140 to 160 pound averages, 10.25211.00; bulk desirable slaughter pigs, 9.25a10.00; strong ‘weights, 10. Uit i Watching the Ships. From the Philadelphia Ledger. The market for visibility, which has its most active exchange on the Bat- tery sea wall, does not seem extraor- dinarily brisk, except on such occa- sions as one of the great passenger lines goes down, or comes up the bay. Between saflings and arrivals the hawkers of field glasses seem to do a languld trade at best, but let a war- ship, a Coast Guard cutter, or a big ocean liner appear and the vender of visibility immediately does a thriving business as he drones his wares: “Great British liner coming up the ba; or “French line going out,” or “See the United States cruiser setting out for .China.” The {dlers throng about to rent a pair of glasses and until the vessel passes out of sight they follow its movements as though they were taking a last look at some departing beloved, or scanning the decks for a sight of some eagerly awaited arrival. . Put one cuptul of sugar, four table- spoonfuls of cold water and one un- beaten egg white into the upper part of a double boiler. Have the water in the lower part boiling. Commence beating the mixture at once and beat constantly while it cooks for about eight minutes, adding a small pinch of salt and one-half a teaspoonful of vanilla. It should then look just like ordinary bolled frosting, and should be almost thick enough to spread. Take it from the stove and continue to heat for about five minutes, or until it has thickened. This is enough to frost a three-layer cake on the top. 1t the frosting is not sufficiently cooked, place it in a double boiler and recook for a short time, or if it is too FINANCIAE?
