BALTIMORE, October 1 (#).—Due to losses occasioned by suits for dam- ages for false arrest, the Fidelity & Deposit Co., large Baltimore surety house, has announced that it has dis- wntlnued bonding police, sheriffs and other ‘“peace officials” except under unusually favorable circumstances. “We are particularly harassed,” a bulletin to the company’s representa- tives stated, by claims and suits on the bonds of deputy sheriffs and sim- jlar officers in States where the police officials are engaged in prohibition en- forcement in addition to their reguiar dutles,” . The bulletin cited the case of a married couple in Cleveland, who after arrest for alleged “petting” in a parked automobile obtained §3,6 damages. BUTTER DEMAND UP. Storage Supplies Favored During Past Few Days. CHICAGO, October 1 (#).—Light supplies of fancy butter and compara- tively high prices for this time of the r have brought about improved de- mand for the better grades of storage butter. Many large users are now paying as much for fancy storage as for fresh arrivals. Withdrawals from storage exceed the reduction of the corresponding period a year ago by 1,097,471 pounds at_the four principal markets. Production of butter is considerably below that of a year ago, but cool weather and ample supplies of feed are expected to check the decline of the make. Indications are that a larger number of fresh cows are now on the farms and that this is espe- clally the case in the “whole milk" sections of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Towa. PRODUCE BAN LIFTED. By the Associated Pres CHICAGO, October 1.—As a really first-class terror, jack frost has about retired from the ring in-so-far as 1927 is concerned. Trade reports at hand today indicate that the country’s corn crop except in some sections of east- orn Towa, Illinois and Indiana is now cally safe from frost damage. by the fact that despite months of anxiety, no frost damage of consequence has yet taken place in the main corn belt, prices in the corn market this morning were at virtually the lowest level of the scason, 1% to 4% off, compared with a week ago. At the same time, wheat was at ‘% decline to 3 advance, oats, 3 down to 34 up, and provisions varying from 15¢ set-back to 22c advance, According to current unofficial re- ports here, it would take either a heavy frost or a light freeze to do se- rious damage to corn now, even in the that are late, Experts, how- ay that moderately warm and dry weather i8 much to be desired from this time on for several weeks to improve the quality of the crop, which at present promises to be very jrregular and with a yield smaller than last year's final retur Liberal stocks of lard in sight tend to make lard prices sensitive to ac- tion of the corn and cotton markets.
