With three troops of Squadron A of New York, in the centre of a hollow square of his famous “Rough Riders,” the President was driven to the Capitol and OOSEVELT LUCK they sworn in by Chief Justice Fuller. And what a sight Pcnnsylvama avenue was that day! Thlrty thousand troops, step- pinz along to the strains of martial music, colorful uniforms and an army of dignitaries made this one of the most interesting in- augurals in years. That night the Inaugural Ball was held in the Pension Office building, while fireworks illumined the sky at the Monument. And what gayeties centered in the White House during this ad- ministration! The Roosevelt children were interesting and high- snirited. The house was gay with young people. The two daugh- ters of the house, Miss Alice and Miss Ethel, were presented to society—and such a round of entertaining followed! Almost two hundred White House functions were scheduled during the seven years of the Roosevelt administration. An unusual number of di=tincuished foreigners visited our shores—Prince Henry of Prussia, members of the Rochambeau and Lafayette families came from F-ance. the Crown Prince of Siam, a Chinese notable and a relative of the Tananese Mikado—all were entertained at the Executive Man- sion. And there was romance, too—when Miss Alice Roosevelt rli~ktd her troth to Representative Lonoworth of Ohio. Their veeddineg took place in the historic Blue Room and was the cul- mination of a romance in which all America was interested.
