By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 16.—When Ruth Elder, comely 23-year-old Dixie aviatrix, hops off for Paris her hus- band will be at the field. After various denials she has admitted that she is not Miss, but Mrs. For two vears she has been the wife of Lyle Womack, a salesman in Lake- land, Fla. She explained that she had always used her maiden name while a dentist's assistant in Lakeland, and that she had been “kidding” reporters and others who sought to determine the domestic status of the young wom- an who wants to be the first of her sex to fly over the ocean. The denials that she was married persisted until some time after news dispatches from Florida were called to her attention. “‘Married girls in New York u their maiden names; why shouldn’t I she asked, “Even at home I am known as Miss Elder, though people know we are married. My husband knew I had hoped for a chance to fly, and he helped pay for my training. And he is even coming here to be with me until Capt. Haldeman (Capt. George Haldeman, her copilot) and I take off.” BISHOP TO DEDICATE CHURCH PROPERTY Dr. Freeman to Officiate at Cere- monies for Newly Acquired Addi- tion to Episcopal Home. AIR DASH TO U. S. (Continued from First Page.) would head for Newfoundland ahd thence to New York. Two fast air- planes of the Free State air force e corted the Princess Xenia to the coast Fitzmaurice, Capt. MacIntos companion in’ the flight, is comman- | dant of the Irish Free State air force. Capt. MacIntosh is known as “the pilot of the night,” because he claims the record for the largest number of hours of nocturnal flying ever made. With 13 years of experience he has the reputation of being one of the best pilots in the world. He played a considerable part in the development of aviation by trying out many new machines, both com- reercial and military. He was pilot on the western front throughout the war and had many narrow escapes, but came through unharmed. He attained the rank of captain before resigning from the royal air force in 1919 and has since been a pilot for the Impe- rial Airways. ‘ An “All-Weather” Pilot. In that capacity he carried thou- sands of Americans to and from Lon- don and Paris. He is an “all-weather” pilot and is credited with baving crossed the Channel more times than any other aviator. Two months ago he resigned from the Imperial Air- ways to undertake preparations for the transatlantic flight that he began today. He is 32 years old and un- married. Commandant Fitzmaurice saw ser- vice in the World War in the British infantry, cavalry and air force. He joined the Leinster Regiment in 1914 when only 15, and was sent home. Three months later he rejoined and went to France with the Seventeenth Lancers. In May, 1916, he was wound- ed and transferred to the infantry. He fought at Arras and in the Somme sections with the West Surreys. Lat- er he recelved a commission in the Liverpool Irish regiment. Commandant Fitzmaurice was transferred to the air force in 1917, with which he served for the re- mainder of the war, and with army of occupation in Germany until 1919. He made his first night mail flight from Folkestone to Cologne in 1919. The next year he was picked as pilot of a projected Cairo to Cape Town flight which was abandoned. He joined the Free State air force in 1922, He is married and has one child. Leeds Is Backing Flight. The plane, Princess Xenia, is a Fok- ker 7-A, with a 510-horsepower Jupiter 6 air-cooled motor. * Willlam B. Leeds is MacIntosh’s chief financial backer for the flight, but the pilot is said to have also put all his own resources into the enter- prise. More funds were needed, how- ever, and he spent some time looking for a paying passenger to share the ‘The plane is named for Princess Xenia of -Russia, wife of Leeds. MacIntosh announced that he would head for New York, but would con- tinue on to Philadelphia to claim a $25.000 prize offered by the Evening Bulletin. The newspaper, however, has ‘withdrawn the prize in view of recent long-distance flight disasters, and Mac- Intosh has not announced any change of destination since the withdrawal. Woman Sought to Make Trip. For a time there was a prospect of a race hetween MacIntosh and Charles A. Levine in the Columbia, as both awaited favorable weather reports. Levine recently tired of walting and announced a change in his plans, say- ing he would take his New York-to- Berlin monoplane Columbia eastward to India instead of westward across the Atlantic. Miss Mable Boll, wealthy American, formerly of Rochester, N. Y., and now resident in Paris, was reported to have offered MacIntosh $3,920 for the pas- senger’s seat, and to have been re- fused. She made similar offers to others planning westward trans- atlantic flights. WEATHER CONDITIONS “FAIR.” New York Meteorologist Says yWinds May Prevail in Mid-Ocean. NEW YORK, September 16 (P).— Dr. James H. Kimball, meteorologist of the local Weather Bureau, said to- day that from meager reports of north Atlantic weather he belleved condi- tions were “fair” for Capt.” Mac- Intosh’s flight. ‘With but few European and North- east weather reports in, he said, he could not give an accurate forecast until later in the day. Basjpg conditjons from St. John eastward to mid-ocean on yesterday's late reports, however, he said that south to southwest winds would prob- ably prevail on the surface with south- west winds aloft. Mostly overcast weather would cover this stretch of Atlantic, he said, with occasional showers and probably fog.
