INANCIAL.S CALL MONEY RATE AID T0 BOND SALES Privilege of Renewals at 3 1-2 Per Cent Figures in Trading. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YODK, August renewal rate of 31 per call mopey today and the e: In time rates kept the bond market on an even keel and strengthened the position of the United States Treasury :vm\ respect to its September financ- Ing. Quite a number of high grade in- vestment issues and others of a more speculative character moved upward Into new high ground. The improve- ment in legal class under renewed buy- ing by banks and insurance companies has stimulated the market for ta exempt iss and relleved the em-| barrassing c estion existing in it ever since the last New York City sale. Effect on Gilt-edged Bonds. | As an illustration of the effect of the declining money rates on prices of gilt-edged bonds, United States Steel | sinking fund 5s sold today at the new | high price of 109%, at which they vield 4.45 per cent. The bonds now are at approximately the figure at| which a certain number are drawn | ®ach year, so there is no further ad- vantage in buying these bonds for the substantial premium that was possible earlier to obtain over the purchase price. The United States Steel Corpo- ration has now taken up $42,500,000 of the 5s, which remain alive in its treas- ury and draw interest. The United States Government list was firm, with the new 3% per cent bonds at about 101. Practically all the new 413s and 4%s railroad bonds were at a premium over their original price. In the industrial department con- vertible bonds took the lead. J. Kay- ser 5l4s advanced to a new high record, 1% points over Wednesday's elosing. and about 6 points above the subscription figures. International Paper 6s gained %, and Chile Copper bs a substantial fraction. United States Rubber 5s were in good de- mand at 94, Dodge 6s held their recent gain, the packing house issues were steady, as were the new adn oils. Most of the independent iron and steel company bonds showed improve- ment. Railroad List Features. In the railroad list Eries, New Ha- vens, Friscos, St. Paul, Seaboard Air Line, and the new Western Maryland b§s were outstanding. Not a great deal of change took place in the foreign issues.. There ‘were slight declines during the day in the French and Belgian bonds as a re- sult of profit taking following their 1 ', steady rise, and some irregulari- ty in Argentine, Bolivian, Chilean, Neorwegian and Italian descriptions. Since the maturity of the Industrial Bank of Japan 6s, on August 15, there has been a good demand for the Tokyo Electric s, due August 1, 1928. As a one-year maturity, this bond around 993 yvields better than 6% per cent. Present indications point to a total of not over $125,000,000 in new issues in the first three weeks of August. NEW YORK, August 18 (#).—The raw sugar market was steady and un- changed early today. The only sale reported was 7,000 bags of Philippines, due the end of this month, to a local refiner at 4.46, delivered, but there was further buying at this level, with most holders asking fractionally higher prices. ‘hanges in raw sugar futures were narrow, but the undertone was steady, with the market at midday net un- changed to 1 point higher. Steadiness was due to covering, which was be- lieved to be the taking in of hedges against sales in the spot market, but trading on the whole was of small pro- portions. Reflned sugar was unchanged at 5.70 to 5.80 for fine granulated, with business light and of a hand-to-mouth character. ' , occurs in Xenon, a vary rare g extent of the atmosphere to th. NEW YORK, August 18.-—After a briet interval, in which the market hesitated in its upward movement, operations for the rise made further headway in certain directions on the Curb Exchange today. The recently prominent industrial favorites, how- ever, were neglected for others that had not been bid up so sharply. Industrial Rayon Corporation shares were brought to the front and bid up to new high prices. The demand was accompanied by the announcement that the corporation is planning con- struction of a new plant, which is to double the company's output. Tubize Artificlal Silk was taken at 225, but Celanez new felt the effect of profit- taking. Another incident which it was contended would work out profitably for the Rayon manufacturers was the rise in cotton prices following the un- expected’ disclosures in the Goyern- ment crop estimate. The favorable report of the Cities Service Co. for the 12 months ended July 31 was followed by a better de- mand for the common stock above 48, but improvement was limited. The ofl shares did better despite the be- lief that another cut in crude ofl price schedules was impending and likely to be announced next week. Pipe line issues were favorites, possi- bly because of the belief that in view of the huge output from the major fields this class of company was in better position to disclose larger earn- ings than the producers and refiners. Tllinois Pipe, Buckeye and Prairie Pipe were favorites. Such issues as Johns-Manville, Cu- neo Press and Gobel common were held in check by profit taking, but no weakness was apparent. The new F. N. Burt Co. common stock of $25 par value was admitted to trading and ran up from 6114 to above 62. American Heating 6s, which were un- der pressure on the preceding day were in demand above 10313, Servel Cor- poration 6s and Electrle Refrigera- tion 6s felt the effect of further sell- ing pressure. . By the Aseociated Press, NEW YORK, August 18.—The cot- ton market showed continued nervous- ness and irregularity today. After ad- vancing to 20.28 at the opening on a private crop indication of 13,215,000 { bales, December eased off to 20.04 on another private report pointing to a yield of 14,435,000 bales, and subse- quent rallies on reports of rains in Central and Eastern belt sections were followed by reactions. December was selling around 20.05 in the midaft- ernoon market, with the general list about mnet unchanged to 6 points higher. The failure of the small cotton crop figures to bring in a more general or aggressive demand seemed rather a disappointment to holders of contracts. This setback was accompanfed by rumors of another and more favorable private report, which made its ap- pearance at midday, placing the con- dition at 67.4 and the indicated yield at 14,435,000 bales. The publication of the figures failed to inspire much additional selling, however, and the market was quiet at midday, Decem- ber ruling around 20.12 and the active positions showing net advances of about 6 to 12 points.
