CHICAGO, March 4.—Dr. Harry Pratt Judson, president emeritus of the University of Chicago, died sud- denly of heart disease in his hotel apartment home here yesterday The noted educator had been ill five days, but no anxlety had been felt. He was 76 years old. Dr. Judson was president of the University of Chicago from 1907 until he retired in 1923. Funeral services will be held Mon- day afternoon in Joseph Bond Chapel at the University of Chicago, with Rev. Charles Gilkey. pastor of the Hyde Park Baptist Church and trustee of the university, in charge. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery will follow. Dr. Judson was born in Jamestown, N. Y. He received his bachelor of arts degree at Williams in 1870 and in 1883 gained his master’s degree. Dr. Judson came to the University of Chicago from the University of Minnesota, where he was professor of history. He was the author of many books. He was a director and active in the affairs of the Rockefeller Foundation and had served as a member of several Federal Government commissions. MRS. M. A. STOESEL DIES. Mrs. Mary Anna Stoesel, 89 vears old, a native of Easton, Pa., and for the past six years a yesidenk -of Washington, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Willa B. Hammond, 3720 Malcolm street, Wednesday. She had been ill several weeks. Funeral services were held at Easton this afternoon. March A jury in Guilford Superior Court yes: terday awarded $141,500 damages to executors of Brown Finch, Thomas- ville manufacturer, who was killed by a Fouthern Railway train March 28. 1925, The case, which was against the Southern Railway Co., is said to have resulted in the largest verdict in a damage suit for the death of a person in_the history of the State. Executors sued for $250,000 on count of the death of Mr. Finch and $2,000 for the destruction of his auto- mobile. Of the award made $1,500 was for the destruction of the car. CARMEL, Calif., March Ira Remsen, president emeritus of Johns Hopkins University, died here last night after a bricf illness. Death was attributed to natural cau He was 81 years old. - Dr. Remsen, internationally known educator and chemist, had been hon- ored by French and British societies for his work in chemistry. He founded the American Chemical Journal in 1879, and was its editor up to the time of his death. Born in New York. Dr. Remsen was born at Febr elor’s 5.—Dr. New York v 10, 1846, and took his Bach- degree at the Collese of the City of New York. Later he took an M. D. at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, and received the degree of doctor of philosophy at Gottingen, Prussia, in 1870. He had been given the hon- orary degree of doctor of laws hy Columbia University, Princeton, Yale, Toronto, Harvard and other schools. He marrled Mrs. Elizabeth H. Mal- of New York, April 5, 1875, Headed Campaign Committee. One of Dr. Remsen's last activities was as honorary chairman of the national committes in charge of rais ing funds for the Rdward Curtis Franklin fellowship in chemistry at Stanford University. Dr. Franklin will retire from the Stanford faculty in June, and when his “friends and students desired to honor him hy rais- fng $10,000 or $15,000 to found a fel lowship in his honor, Dr. Remsen con. sented to help. Dr. Remsen is survived by his widow and two children, Ira Mallory and Charles Mallory Remsen. Mrs. Rem- sen and Ira, who is an artist here, were at the bedside. CHICAGO, March 5.—The death of Dr. Nathaniel Butler, former president of Colby University and for many Jniversity of Chicago, was revealed yesterday. He died at his home here Thursday, aged 74. Coming from Maine to do education- al work in Lake Forest, Ill, in 1873, old Unlversity of Chicago in 1884, and came to the present University of Chicago two vears after its organiza- tlon under President William Rianey Harper. Dr. Butler served the University of Chicago as director of University ex. tension and professor of literature, and after his return from. the presidency of Colby, as dean of the department of education and of the college. He was professor of Latin and Eng- lish at the University of Illinois from 1889 to 1842, At the time of his death he was assistant to the president of the Uni versity of Chicago.
