Rudner took the verdict calmly. ‘They have convicted an Innocent man,” was his only comment. De- fense counsel declared motion for a new trial will be filed, and Trial Judge Abram W. Agler set next Monday as the date for a hearing on the motion. All Canton gathered about the court- house waiting for the verdict. Throngs filled halls and corridors and over- flowed into the lawn and shops across the street, awaiting word from the jury room. The trial of “Blg Ben,” as the master conspirator against Mellett, called Canton’s ‘“crusading editor,” was of special significance to the townsmen, who had read Mellett's ac- cusations ag: t the “jungle,” Can- ton’s underworld, and then reports of the search for his slayers conducted by city, county and State officials after the editor was shot down at his garage door on the night of July 16. Verdict Held Gratifying. Rudner’'s conviction takes officiais past the half-way mark in their at- tempts to finish the work begun by Mellett, they said. Ora Slater, Cin- cinnati’ detective; Prosecutor Henry Harter and former Prosecutor C. B. McClintock were aided by Federal, county and state investigators in as- sembling evidence against the three men, and Harter, at the announcement of the verdict, declared that the ver- dict “was gratifying, after consider- ing the deplorable condition here-last Summer before Mellett was murdered.” Possibility of further indictments in the case was indicated by Harter, who said the grand jury will be called Monday. He declined to reveal, how- ever, whether new evidence had been found. . LADY ASTOR’S FIGHT FOR SUFFRAGE AIDED Mass Iai:byilg of Parliament Mem- bers Planned to Force Equal Rights. LONDON,.February 24—Lady As- tor’s attack on the government in an effort to obtain equal suffrage for women will be sensationally support- ed, under present plans, by mass lob- bying of the members of Parliament at the House of Commons on March 3 by women drafted from the numer- ous suffragist organizations. Lady Astor herself is coaching the lobbyists for the demonstration, which will be the first of its kind since the hectic days of militant suffrage activ- ities before the war. All the women's organizations are co-operating. Up to the present Lady Astor, who belongs to Premier Baldwin’s party, has not participated in processions and similar demonstrations for fear of embarrassing the -<Conservatives, but now she declares §he cannot stand for the government’s delay in carrying out its promise of equal suffrage at -the «ext general election.
