GOUNTRY T0 HEAR PRESIDENT'S TALK PStations Plan Wide Hook-Up to Broadcast Speech February 22. Qlose on the heels of the announce- $nent of a continuation of direct-from- hestage broadcas grand ope nother new departure in radio repre- | mng one of the most ambitious dcasts ever undertaken is an mounced. The time is February 22 and the o on is President - Cool )dge’s address in the House of Repre- | mentatives in commemor on of the pirth of George Washington. An augmented hook-up that fs| purely a noncommercial enterprise on the part of several kcore of stations has been arranged. It s designed to rarry the Presi- dent’s voice from t h e legislative chamber, where Congress, t h e cabinet, the Su- preme Court, the diplomatic corps and a multitude of other dignitaries will be assembled, to the farthest corners of the land. Details are in the hands of Wil- liam Tyler Page, Mr. PAGE. | clerk of the House of Representatives, and M. H. Aylesworth, president o the National Broadcasting Company The precise arrangements have not yet been made known, but it has been learned that the National Broadcast ing Company's " and “blue” mnet- works of 30 stations will be supple-| mented by additional relays, particu larly so that the h. the Rocky Mountain and the ic arcas may be “covered.” Those who are interested in the business of government may tune in on an earlier address by President Coolidge. At 7 p.m. Saturday he will speak before the semi-annual meeting | at the Bureau of the Budget in Conti- nental Memorial Hall, his voicé being carried over WEAF, WRC, WEEL WJAR, WGR, WCSH, WCAE, KSD and WGY. The administration’s policy and the operation of the Fed eral budget will be his subject. Seed catalogues used to be the mail | carrier’'s greatest burden at this time of the year, but now the radio manu- facturers have added weight to his sack. Almost mail delivery brings us anoth of lterature from the radio manufac- turers, all of it concerning the pre- vailing styles in 1927 receivers. Judging from the: the average receiver sold will be a five or possibly a sis set with two stages of radio qnency, two stages of audio frequenc and not more than two controls nrl dials. The price in the table mod ranges around $100. The more arl tocratic-looking console model is for about $165 and, as a rule, in- cludes built-in speaker. These new sets, according to the advertisements, are more selective than the 1926 models, easier to tune and are productive of superfor tone quality. Mostly, the new model buflt for use with ae grounds, although many operate with | loops and are adaptable to either type of receiving antennae. Barely less than one-half of the new types are designed to function with either dry or wet batteri ‘ Virtually all of them, however ly adaptable to battery eliminators. The tuning scheme, It seems, is shifting back again to two and three Alals, instead of one. The two-dial sets constitute about 34 per cent of the total models, while the three-dial type leads, with 41 per cent. The sin- gle-control sets have dropped to about 25 per cent. Illuminated scales and calibrated dials also seem to be more popular, while many designs operate with two or three rheostats in place of a single-control rheostat knob. A galaxy of features predominates | on the program tonight of WRC. The selection of a headliner is matter of taste. For instance, there will be a concert by the Army Band, the weekly concerts of _the Davis Saxophone Octet and the Ipana __ Trouba- dours, the spar- Kling entertain- ment of the Smith Brothers and a light opera, “Love's Vow," which will be sung by the WEAF operatic group. Sand- wiched between these attractions will be the week- Iy political sume of Frederic Willlam Wile, which has become S0 popu that WEAF, | WLIT, WSCH and WGR have joined WRC in broadcasting the talks. The cast for the opera includes Adels Parkhurst, sopra Franoes George O'Brien. additional | radio catalogues | Paperte, contralto; George O'Brien | and Harvey IHindermeyer, tenors;| Theollore Webb, baritone, and Jac Oakley, basso The Smith Brothers have promised to add another v » or two to their | unique introductory song, and the | Saxophone Octet wi at their | program with the famous | Spanish dances of Moszkowski. ‘ The entire ran n.(n..mmm‘ wavelengths were JMstners with select States, Canada and Mexico came in with good volume rity, and | only in a few 4 there evidence of o i to over arowding on the ether It was | reception. | an ideal night for radi Static was too mild to be ¢ with interference, and the command of | sets last night. | Statfons in all sections of the United | THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, Programs of Distant Stations Scheduled for Fastern Standard Time —_—m—m— 4 TO 5 P Stations.
