BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, January 21.—While the bond market was still somewhat irregular foday all the important moves were on the side of advance and the general tone was better than on Thursday when large realizing sales had to be absorbed. Foreign issues took a prominent part in the trading with the Brazilian obligations as the leaders. The two Brazillan bonds in which speculation has been most active for the past two weeks, the 61s of 1857 and the 7s of 1952 both sold at mew highs on the movement, the former above 93 and the latter above 98, while the Brazilian 8s were firm around their recent top. The last named share with French 7is the distinction of being that rarity among foreign bonds, a non- callable {ssue. Next to the Brazils the German bonds were in greatest demand. City of Berlin 6%s sold at par which is their high and also the redeemable prices. Against these advances must be set a fractional decline in Greek 7s under an unusually heavy volume of offerings and the inability of the Italian 78 to further extend their re- cent gains. In the domestic part of the list the sugar bonds were conspicuous. War ner Sugar 7s of 1937, which had such & spectacular rise on the day before added to their gains nearl. points, but then reacted. The 7s of 1941 were heavily dealt in, but did little more than maintain their position. Bonds of the Cuban sugar-producing panies were higher, including Cuba Cane 8s, Manati 7iks and Punta Alegre . The feature among the oils was the Sinclair 614s, which were actively bought, reaching a new high on the recovery. New York Railways incomes were in the greatest relative demand of the local tractions. While United States Government bonds, were quiet, prices held firmiy around the record high. The first 4% Liberties and the Treasury 3%s equal- ed their record earlier in the session today. There was not much trading either in the high-grade rails, but here, too. quotations were well main tained. West Shores 4s, practically a perpetual issue, were up fractionally and at a new top for the movement. WHEAT PRICES RALLY AFTER WEAK START ot 93% o3| Heavier Absorption of Offerings Reported Due to Better Ex- port Business Outlook. i | By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, January ~—With indi. cations pointing to considerable new export business in North American wheat, prices averaged higher early today despite a weak start. Liverpool quotations were lower than due, but buying here readily took care of of ferings. Opening at 13 cent to 3 cent down, Chicago wheat rallied to above yesterday’s finish. Corn, oats and pro- visions were firm, corn starting un- changed and then scoring gains. European requirements of all grains are larger than have been estimated, it was contended today by some trade leaders. The fact was cited in this connection with Europe as absorbing feed grain, notably corn and barley, at rising prices, and Chicago rye is up 10 cents a bushel with export demand continuing every day. Liklihood of ‘corn crop damage in Argentina is attracting special atten- tion. Temperatures over the Argen- tine corn belt have ranged materially above normal for the last two weeks with practically no rainfall interven- ing. The stage of corn growth there is now at the period when ears are filling and moderate temperature with ample moisture is desirable, whereas continued heat and dry weather are injurious.
