CAPT. CAMPBELL FETED AT DINNER Warner, Lejeune and Others Praise Marine Winner of Schiff Trophy. Honors which have been conferred upon Capt. Harold D. Campbell, U. S. M. C., of the val air station at San Diego, Calif,, for winning the Herbert ' Schiff memorial trophy, awarded annually to the naval air- man flylng the greatest number of hours without an accident, came to a climax at the Mayflower Hotel last night in the form of an informal ban- quet tendered the Marine aviator by the memorial trophy committee. Assistant Secretary of the Navy Edward P. Warner, in_charge of aeronautics; Maj. Gen. John A. Le- commandant of the Marine rps; Capt. Emory S. Land, acting chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics, and Brig. Gen. James E. Fechet, as« sistant chief of the Army Air Corps, joined with Lieut. Walter C. Bryan, representing the Schiff family, in pay- ing tribute to Capt. Campbell for fly- ing 839 hours and 40 minutes during the past fiscal year without accident. Almost Cracked Up.” Capt. Campbell modestly replied to the laudatory addresses given by the speakers and revealed for the first time that in flying East from the Pacific Coast in a Marine Corps De Haviland plane, he almost “cracked up.” Capt. Campbell flew to Washington Friday from San Diego to receive the Herbert Schiff memorail trophy from President Coolidge at the White House yesterday noon. “I made three landings at night” Capt. Campbell related, “flew through several storms in the West and was forced down once. Last Tuesday, we flew nearly six hours and made only 130 miles, the toughest trip of my ca- reer. When the storm cleared away I found myself in the heart of the Ozark Mountains. No damage was done and I breathed a sigh of relief. It would have been a sad joke on me had I “cracked up” while on my way here to receive this trophy.” Capt. Campbell plans to depart for his home station by airplane, but will visit mis home in New England before heading West. Warner and Lejeune Speak. Assistant Secretary Warner em- phasized, the value of Capt. Campbell's achievement toward dispelling the fear in the public mind regarding the safety of afrcraft. Gen. Lefeune com- plimented the Marine Aviation Corps on the fact that there has been ‘no clashing and clanging within the ranks.” He declared his policy had been to urge Marine aviators not to break their necks in time of peace, although in war it probably is a neces- sity. WARSAW, Poland, October 16.— The notorious bandit Zielinski, also known as the “Polish Rinaldo Rinaldini,” has been killed by the police. In the last six months Zie- linski had committed numerous mur- ders, thefts and burglaries in and around Warsaw, almost under the eyes of the police, “who always reached the scene too late. The police surrounded Zielinski sev- eral times, but the_’bandit escaped dfter killing or wounding a number of his pursuers. Zielinski also was noted for his love affairs, being considered irresist- ible. Last night he gave a bandit ball in one of the suburbs of Warsaw and, learning of this, the entire dis- trict was patrolled throughout the night. This afternoon the police dis- covered the house in which the ball was still in full swing. An attack on the premises was made, and Zielinski was killed in the exchange of fire and two of his bandit friends were seriously wounded. bert Schiff, a naval aviator killed in an accident at Hampton Roads, Va., while flying, and declared it would do more to stimulate safety in flying than any other agency he knew of. Gen. Fechet Cites Case. Gen. Fechet would not let the im- pression go broadcast that the Army Alr Corps is not taking safety pre- cautions for its airmen. He cited a general order issued by “An Old Cavalryman,” who after being told that a large number of wrécked air- planes he had seen was the result of “rough landings by students,” in- formed the beginners that “hereafter, students will not make rough land’ ngs."” Capt. Campbell, the last speaker, read a brief address written in the air while flying with Maj. E. H. Brain- ard, chief of Marine Corps Aviation, between Quantico and Washington, yesterday. Lieut. Bryan and Lieut. F. H. Conant, 2nd, of the Bureau of Aeronautics, arranged the dinner for Capt. Campbell. JAPANESE “STRANGLER” RELEASED FROM PRISON By Cable to The Star and New York World. He served 2 years and 10 months of his 10-year sentence for the murder of the three.
