" 30 * FIN LIST S STRONGER IN'STOCK MARKET Eafly Declines Followed by Bolstering Up of Prices by Heavier Buying. BY STUART P. WEST. NEW YORK, October 13.—The stock market today was generally stronger. There was a period toward the end of the first hour, when prices gvent off all through the list and got down to their bottom figures for the recent decline. But a combination of sup- porting orders, fresh buying and short covering, produced the rally, which ehowed midway in the morning and stained in the later deal- manifestly in a the result of the Jate liguidation. Disappointment was expressed because, ~rcording to the latest Federal reserve statement brok- erage loans were down less than £4,000,000. But this covered the week only up to October 6, and it was ex- pected that the effects of the recent and extensive decline in xchange prices would show more decisively in the reports to come. The market was not influenced any more than it has been all along by considerations of money. The rate on call loans remained at 5 per cent, time money was dull, with quotations a shade off from their high. Nothing of importance in the way of outside news had developed over the holidays. It was chiefly a question whether the reaction after the overdone specula- tion of two and three months ago had carried far enough. As stocks staried to come back after th> unsettlement of the first hour, the recov converged upon u. Steel and General Motors as the two leaders, also taking in a large number of the rails and industrial specialties. Atchison went up 2 points, Rock Island up over a point, also Southern Railway. Norfolk and Western was selling 2 points higher, while Reading, Kansas City Southern and Wheeling and Lake Erie were all higher. 3 The remarkable feature in the rail- way diyision was Colorado and South- ern. It had closed Monday at 83 after having stood out strongly all through the recent break. It shot up violently today. The stock is earn- ing over $13 a ‘share and paying no dividends. It would have to declare @ very generous distribution in order 1o justify the present price. One idea was that good-sized dividends were in store, another idea was that the Bur- lington, as majority owner, might be picking up the minority shares in the same way that New York Central bought in all it could of the minority holdings of the Big Four. Oil shares improved with the rest. Marland and Phillips Petroleum more The market strong position particularly. The pressure against Willys-Overland _was relaxed and Pierce-Arrow rebounded nearly a point. Profit taking appeared to be over, at least for the time being, in Radio Corporation and the stocks did better. Markets at a Glance NEW YORK (®: Stocks Colorado and Southern rall to new high. NEW YORK, October 13.—Prices for investment bonds were firm all along the line at the resumption of business today after the holiday. Business was still in small volume but a more confldent feeling was in evidence. Here and there there were frac tional advances and practically no offerings at conces Specifically Atchison general Union Pacific first 4s, West Sho , Kansas City Terminal 4s and Nickel Plate all sold higher. Most of the United sions. 4 Blas States Government list was up a shade also. Besides this display of strength in the investment group, the other few ture of the day was the certain foreign issues. were under the greatest pressure in this part of the list, gettin 95, a new low for the v heavy offerings. The onl tion ‘given was that of competition with the new Chilean loan, wi was predicted today would be m keted on about a 6.50 per cent basis which is a higher return to the in vestor than that given by the Uru guay bonds at the wmarket. The German industrial and municipal oh ligations were also inclined to drag today. Berlin 65 and Cologne 6las at 96, were down a peint from the high of a week ago. French, Belgian and Ital bonds were heavy as well. On the other hand, Japanecse 612s were in good demand. The most interesting movement above the speculative rails was that in St. Louis, San Francisco incomes Starting at 87%, down substantially from Monday's close, tne price rallied to above 88, one block of $1635,000 par value being taken at that pri The local tractions were stead cept Brooklyn Manhattan 6s and Man hattan Railway 4s, which were off fractionally at one time. CHICAGO, October 13.—Favorabie weather in Canada, together with « notable lack of buying support here led early today to lower prices for wheat. Values dropped about 1'. cents a bushel before enough com mission house demand for wheat was aroused to absorb the offerings. Open ing 12 to 1 cent down, wheat gave little evidence of power to rally. Corn oats and provisions were also weak corn starting % to 1! cents off and then continuing to sag. Liberal export sales of North Amer jcan wheat over the holiday helped somewhat to check the declining tendency which prices showed a good deal of the time today. On the other hand, current advices indicated that the British coal strike was likely linger and_that searclty of vessels available for grain was a per sistent outstanding feature. Larger estimates of the 1926 pro duction of wheat in Italy were cov sidered by some authorities to be an offset for disappointing vields in France and England.
