Mr. Chilton, speaking at a lunch- eon given by the English-speaking Union and the Transatlantic Soclety, referred to the debt question by say- ing he would “venture very cautious- 1y on ground on which angels might r to tread.” He added: v gospel in the matter of debts, wWhether public or private, is that it 1§ better for the debtor to pay them 18 full if he can, or at least as much as he can, for by doing so he re- establishes coniidence in his integrity and reacquires credit, which, as we all know, is the keystone of all busi- ness and prosperity.” CROPS ARE INFERIOR, Canada’s Harvest Below 10-Year Average, Report Reveals. By the Associated Press. ANN ARBOR, Mich., October 13.— The stand of the Christian faith on a number of questions, including the labor movement, astronomy and the|* World War, was discussed by the Right Rev. Arthur Foley Winnington- Ingram, Lord Bishop of London, at a round-table conference with students of the University of Michigan here last night. Opposition of some sects to the study of astronomy does not reflect the attitude of Christianity, he said. In astronomy the mind is drawn on to believe in the existence of God, rather than the reverse. Touching on the relations of the church and labor, he said both wish | to maintain a fearless attitude and act independently regardless of what class may be injured or helped. As contrasted with the recent contro- versy between American Federation of Labor and Detroit ministers over refusal of pulpit privileges to the former, he said, considerable adverse comment resulted in England because the church sided with striking mine workers. The church supported the World War, he said, because it was purely a_ conflict of aggression on the part of the Teutonic allies. The bishop scouted possibility of a reconciliation between Protestant and Roman Catholic religions. “I can see no prospect of such a mmlmmlmxon in the near future,” he said New Cabinet Appointed.
