THE EVENING STORY His Letters. ARY PELL was jolned by a girl friend at the corner of Scott and Locust streets on her way downtown that evening. She was going to the post office for the last mail of the day, but there was no reason to hurry, because the train was just leaving and even if the clerks sorted swiftly she must walit another 10 minutes before the window was open, “Expecting a letter from Fred?” Ruth Graham asked. Then as Mary *nodded, “I wish Steve was out of town so he could write to me. Its such fun getting letters, I think, and Steve writes such perfectly splendid ones. He's shy when he's with you, but once he gets hold of a pen— Jiminy! How he makes the words fly. I suppose Fred's letters are ter- ribly Interesting? 3 Mary bit her lips “Terribly,” she said dryly tried to think of something would turn the subject. They met the shy Steve and he walked wlith them, tongue-tied as usual, but wistfully adoring pretty Ruth. He asked them if they wouldn't like sodas and they stopped at a drug store to get them. “Mail must be sorted by this time,” Ruth said. “I don't see how you can stand it, Mary. I should think you'd rush to get your letter. That's the way I do when Steve's away and —" She paused, blushing furlously, to think she had paid too much be- fore Steve himself. They strolled to the post office and Mary joined the queue before the window. She thought: “I am sure to get a letter from Fred. *He always writes Thursdays,” but she felt no thrill of expectation or uncertainty or surprise. Kven when the clerk put In her hand the familiar white envelope her fingers did not tingle from contact with her lover's mes- sage. Carefully she placed the letter in her pocket and rejoined her friends. Why, if it had been a letter from——" Again she caught herself u time. But Steve, understanding, grinned blissful Through five reels Mary sat with the letter in her pocket ‘and some- how she was aware of it the whole time, not joyfully conscious as was Ruth when Steve stole a squeeze of her hand, but with dull dread of the time she must open it. Once she lost track of the pictures and Ruth whispered: Tm glad she’s broken with him. I'd have done it long before. But they made her hang on on purpose. Suspense, Steve calls it.” “I didn't catch the sald “Why, she got so tired of him al- ways hanging around and saying nothing, don’t you see? There he is again. Looks like Fred, I think.” He aid look like Fred, just that handsome, with the same taflored look about the shoulders and hips. She had alw: admired the way the bottom red's trousers met his socks; some men looked 8o shabby about the feet. Yes, Fred was good- looking, fine enough for a picture hero, and he had an air that caught n girl's eyes. Besides, he could talk, as poor Steve couldn’t. She couldn’t help wondering about that. Steve could write beautiful love letters, but he was dumb in Ruth’s presence, wrile Fred could talk most en- gagingly, but when it _came to let- ters—she sighed and Ruth nudged | e last,” Mary r. “What the matter?” Steve and Ruth saw her home. She stood an instant watching them, as they went down the street; they were to be married in the early Fall. Then she went in and found her fa- ther and mother playing checkers and tenderly squabbling as usual. “Where you been, love?”" inquired her mother, “To the movies with Ruth Mrs. Pell smiled. enough, As Mary watched them both she asked suddenly: “Did ever mother, “Did he Steve and That was answer write word of mo | Mary went up to her room. He is so different—in his let- ters. 1 can't see his eyes and hear his voice—and without them his per- sonality seems to be just an empty shell.” Turning out the light, she knelt down by the open window with her face to the night and thought long and deeply of Steve, good, plain Steve, who could pour out his sould to Ruth when his lips were dumb in her presence. Dad had written reamsy to mother, but Fred. gay, handsome, talkative Fred, had nothing to say when he was away from her, and should have desired to say much. It was not the stereotyped phrases ever recurring, it was the fact that writ- ing hurriedly he did not tell her that he loved her or missed her or needed her. At his first written word he be- came @ stranger—an undesirable ac- quaintance. She bowed her head on the window sfll and wept. Weeping, she did not hear the door open or the soft footstep behind her. Not until her mother knelt down be- side her and drew her into her arms did she realize that she was not to bear her trouble alone. On that warm shoulder, with that loving cheek pressed to hers, she poured out the story of her heart and her mother understood. “I can’t go on,” Mary sobbed. “Not with this Fred I've discovered through his letters, I mean.” “But when he comes back?” Mrs. Pell suggested. “No! I shall feel just the same. The—the continuity is broken.” There was a moment's silence and then Mrs. Pell said unexpectedly: “I am glad, dear. It is the best thing that ever happened to you.” “Mother! What do you mean?” “Don’t you see? Fred's letters have revealed him to you as he is. We— your father and T—have seen all the time. We didn’t need to be convinced through his letters as you have been “Maybe,” she added, gentl will now consider somébody else who has loved you a long time. You know who I mean, Mary. s brother Joe.
