NEW YORK, September 25.—The Empire State’s reaction to prohibi- tion assumed major political impor- tance today as both Republican and Democratic parties prepared for State conventions Monday which will nominate candidates for United States Senator, governor and other State of- fices, The Republicans expect difficulties over the liquor question at their con- ventlon here in Madison Square Gar- den, but the Democrats at Syracuse are to nominate Gov. Alfred E. Smith, potential presidential candidate, and others of a ticket agreed upon by party leaders at a conference with the governor. Dry forces expect to make a con- centrated attack on Senator James W. Wadsworth, jr., at the Republican convention. Former State Senator Francis W. Cristman of Herkimer, dry, is opposing the Senator, who favors modification of the Volstead act. There Is every expectation that Senator Wadsworth will be renom- inated, however, and that Mr. Crist- man will run as an independent Re- publican, which might cause the elec- tion of Supreme Court Justice &obert . Wagner of New York City, who will be nominated by the Democrats. “There is little doubt as to the major places on both tickets except as to the Republican candidate for gov- ernor against Smith. No active can- didates have come forward. Senti- ment has centered on no one. Three possibilities have been discussed, but one of them, Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia Univer- + | sity, has said firmly he does not want the 'nomination. Willlam J. Donovan is more ac- ceptable to the dry element, and Ogden L. Mills, Republican, from New York, to the wets. Mr. Mills is not anxious for the nomination, but party L BOOKS BOUGHT ot “Bring Them In” or Phone Fr. 5416 BIG BOOK SHOP, 933 G St. N.W. THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D. C. SATURDAY, SE Insurance Covers About 80 Per Cent Of Florida Losses By the Associated Press. ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., Sep- tember 25.—About 80 per cent of the losses caused by hurricane in the stricken Florida area is cov- ered by insurance, in the opinion of Cliff C. Jones of Kansas City, Mo., member of the executive committee of the National Asso- ciation of Insurance Agents, in convention here. He gave no fig- ures on the ‘total losses or recov- eries by insurance. leaders think he would accept. He is to be keynote orator of the conven- tion. New York Republicans want Butler despite his refusal. The Democratic platform will be devoted prinicipally to State issues, but is expected to criticize President Coolidge for alleged failure to handle the coal strike situation properly, and to re-enunciate the Democratic prin- ciple of a low tariff. There will be no reference to the World Court. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who nomi- nated Smith for President at the 1924 Democratic convention, will preside over the State convention. '."'."‘.
