40-YEAR SENTENCE GIVEN IN GEM THEFT George Cohen Pleaded Guilty in $75,000 Robhery in New York Last Month. i By the Associated Press. ' NEW YORK, August 26.—George Cohen of Chicago, who had pleaded guilty to participation in a $75,000 Jewel robbery in Maiden lane last month, was sentenced today to serve 40 years in Sing Sing prison. Cohen, who gave his Chicago ad- dress as 4241 Roosevelt road, admit- ted taking part with Sol Brofman in holding up the establishment of Abraham W. Faigin. Brofman also pleaded guilty, but sentence was de- ferred. When he was arrested Cohen ad- vised detectives to send him back to Chicago, saying he had valuable in- formation concerning crime conditions there. He intimated he might be able to divulge information concerning the slaying there of Assistant District Attorney McSwiggin. Detectives produced in court a spe- cially constructed shotgun pistol, with which the robber had fired at a woman elevator operator during his escape, It was saild that the weapon came from a ‘“bootleggers’ arsenal” - in Chicago. THE ARRESTED ON CHARGE OF STEALING 2 RINGS Prisoner Says He Found Them ine; Hallway—Woman Declares They Disappeared From Room. Charged with theft of two rings, one valued at $900, William Arthur Shu- bert was brought back to this city last night from his home in Akron, Ohio, by Detective Thomas Nally of police headquarters. Police allege that one of the rings was pawned in Virginia several days ago and that Shubert surrendered a wedding ring and the pawn ticket for the pledged ring to Detective Nally. She told police that she and Mrs. Shubert were acquaintances in Akron for & number of years and recently met in Miami. Mr. and Mrs. Shubert came here last week. They registered at an E street hotel. Mrs. Moore visited them, it 1s alleged, to arrange to have Mrs. Shubert do some dressmaking, and while she and Mrs. Shubert were out of the room, Mrs. Moore states, her rings disappeared. Shubert, according to the police, denies taking the rings from the room, stating he found them in the hallway. Detective Nally was placed on the case after Mrs. Moore notified the police she had received a wire from Shubert in Akron, telling her not to worry about the rings and informing her that a letter would follow. Mrs. Shubert had returned to Washington earlier yesterday and was at the Union Station to greet her husband when he arrived in custody of De- tectivé Nally. He was sent to a pre- cinct station to await a preliminay hearing in Police Court. R CITY NEWS IN BRIEF. To Aid Style and Design. Preliminary plans for the formation of a library of style and design for the ready-to-wear and allied trades are being worked out, and the scheme will be put into operation possibly in time for the next Spring season. according to John W. Hahn, executive director of the National Garment Retallers Association. The idea of the style li- brary was suggested by Franklin Si mon and contemplates the assembly in a convenient location of books on garment and fabric design, together with related data. The material would be for the use of ready-to-wear manu- facturers, designers, retailers, woolen and silk mills and any others who are interested in the styling of women's garments. “Since the idea was first set forth by Mr. Simon " sald Mr. Hahn yester- day, “there have been numerous ex- pressions of commendation and offers of help in supplying the books and other valuable data needed for the prompt functioning of the library. The garment manufacturers regard the plan as extremely well worth while and one that should result in the raising of American style stand- ards in ready-to-wear. The library will not have any official connection with our association, but will have a separate organization and will be the property of the entire ready-to-wear industry.” Card of flmki. OVERHALL.
