WASHINGTON, Low. 107% + 115%!116\ lHV IREVERSAL OF FORM SHOWN BY MARKET Rallies After Early Weak- .| ness—Stiffening of Money Rates Feature of Week. By the Associated’ Press. NEW YORK, August 14.—A com- plete reversal of form in the Stock Market, which rallied briskly after an early period of weakness; a stif- fening of money rates, coincident with the increase from 31 to 4 per cent in the rediscount rate of the New York Federal Reserve Bank: a sharp decline in the wheat and cot- ton matkets, and the declaration of a 50 per cent stock dividend by the directors of the General Motors Cor- poration were the high lights in this ~eek’s financlal and commodity mar- Kets, The decline in stocks apparently started as the correction of a weakened technical position but was extended early Friday by heavy bear selling on the theory that the higher bank rate would be construed as an official warning against stock specu- lation. Wall Street, generally, how- ever, failed to get exclted over the reserve bank's action, regarding it as a natural development in view of the increased commercial demand for funds with the result that a,sharp rally set in late Fridays which con- tinued through today's brief session. Bond prices, which cline as Interest rates go up, started 0 lose ground. Wheat broke several cents a bushel and cotton futures collapsed to new low levels for thegseason on selling inspired by the publication of bear- ish Government crop estimates, in- dicating a larger yield than had been expected. Heavy _consumption of sugar imparted a firm underfone to the market for the raw and refined product. Sterling exchange lost a fraction of a cent in reflection of the increasing number of grain and cotton bills and possibly some speculative selling in- spired by the publication of the Gov- ernment statistics showing a large in- crease in British imports. French francs | fluctuated between 2% and 3 cents. — SUMMER BUSINESS GOOD. Usual Lull Declared Absent for First Time Since War. Special Dispatch to The Star. CLEVELAND, August 14.—No Midsummer dullness has developed in general business this year, says the Cleveland Trust Co.'s Midsummer review, and this fact is noteworthy because in every other year since the war, with the single exception of 1922, there has been a genuine slow- ing down 8uring the Summer months. At the present time the fundamentals of business are sound and the key industries are active. Building construction is going for- ward in large volume; automobile pro- duction and sales are at exceptiorally high level; iron and steel output is unusually active; employment is general with wages high; credit con-. ditions are easy; and the agricultural prospects are good in general, al- though distinctly uneven as between different district: D. C. AUGUST 15. 1926—PART " 1. WHEAT GOES NEAR TOP LEVEL AT CLOSE Advances Throughout Day on Chi- cago Market and Finishes Strong. Corn Price Down. By the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO. August 14. — Wheat readily advanced n price today, and closed strong, 1% to 1% cents net higher. at about the top level reach- ed. Good general buying, together with prospective falling off in the volume of domestic arrivals yes- largely responsible for the upward swing of the wheat market. Corn finished % to 7 cents down, oats unchanged to % and % off and pro- visions unchanged to 15 cents decline. Almost from the outset - wheat values moved upgrade. There was no pressure to sell at any time and although ‘the market eased down a little at times on account of pro- nounced weakness which developed in corn the ensuing recoveries were prompt despite a liberal increase looked for in the United States wheat visible total on Monday. On the other hand, primary receipts this week were 4,467,000 bushels less than last week, and a further notable reduc: tion appears ilkely after the rush of farm offerings from Eastern terri- tory is over. Reports of threshing delay due to further rain in the American and Canadian northwest tended to give additional strength to the wheat market, and so likewise did some fear of frost danger in Canada. The weekly forecast, too, was for showers, whereas dry weather is wanted in Spring-wheat territory as an aid to FINANCIAL. business was called fair for a Sat- urday, but was slow compared with Friday's big sales. Cash wheat prices, however, were firm in all directions. Weather conditions generally fa- vorable for the new corn crop had a bearish effect on the corn market. Oats sympathized. Provisions were responsive fo an upward trend of hog values. CLOTH MARKETS QUIET. NEW YORK, August 14 (#).—Dur- | ing the week there has been a fair outlet for canton and outing flannels to the cutting up and jobbing trades. Bleached goods have been in steady demand. Sheets and pillowcases con- tinued to suffer from the oversupply of wide sheetings from which they are made. The cloth markets Satur- day were quiet. A gcod many fas- tors being away over the week end. The burlap situation was quiet and prices for spots and afloats held un- changed. Jute strengthened 1 pound this week following mill buying of new-crop offerings. Financial Highlights of Past Week LIFE INSURANCE GAINS. Marked Expanslon in Business Dur- ing Past Seven Months.
