10 UNDERTAKERS DENY FENNING PROFITED Joseph Gawler’s Sons, Inc., Say He Owns No Stock in Business. A statement explaining the connec- tion of Commissioner Frederick A. Fenning with the undertaking firm of Joseph Gawler’s Sons, Inc., and citing newspaper references to the Commis- sioner’s being “financially interested” in it, was issued by the firm today. “During the hearings before the FHouse judiciary committee,” the state- ment said, “the fellowing facts were wade perfectly plain, but, in reporting the testimony, were either omitted or inconspicuous sated. They have the public in and_ourselves in the proper light re- zarding his connection with this com- pany. The facts are as follows: . Fenning has been our attor- ney for about 15 years. We were in- corporated under the laws of Virginia November 1, 1916, the incorporators being Charles J. Gawler, Alfred B. Gawler and Walter A. Gawler. In 1919, upon the death of Charles J. Gawler, it became necessary to elect another director and the law required him to be a stockholder of record. This was complied with by electing Mr. Fenning, to whom was issued one share of stock, which he immediately indorsed to Alfred B. and Walter A. Gawler, who own all the stock jointl Mr. Fenning has never received a return from the share of stock in his name, nor has he received anything as commission on any funerals con- ducted for him by us. We do not pay commissions to any one. “Repeatedly the misstatement has heen made that Joseph Gawler's Sons have conducted a large and profit2ble business in connection with funerals of Mr. Fenning’s wards. The truth is that over a period of 22 years we have conducted never more than an average of five such funerals a year at an average cost of $88,92 per fu- neral. A mere statement of this truth should be sufficient to set at rest for all time the allegation that this com- pany has been profiting by business with Mr. Fenning, just as the state- ment we have above made shows conclusively that Mr. Fenning in no way profited from any furerals con- ducted by us.” PONZI BEGS FOR FUNDS TO FIGHT EXTRADITION Former Financlal Wizard Sends Out Chain Letter, Saying “It May Bring You Luck.” By the Associated Press. BOSTON, July 27.—An endless chain letter appealing for funds Is the latest move of Charles Ponzi, one time financial wizard, in his fight against extradition from Houston, Tex., to begin a seven-year sentence here as a ‘‘common and notorious thief.” The letter, carrying the postseript “Don’t destroy this. Mall it or pass it along. It may bring you luck,” "contains an additional plea for lJetters or telegrams to Gov. Ferguson of Texas, “‘urging her not to sign ex- tradition papers for my return to Massachusetts.” “No amount is too small,” Ponzl writes. “If a recelpt is desired it will be mailed to you.” From the Sehoteil to the Makers of Kleen-Heet *This is the third winter that I have oper- ated my Kleen-Heet oil heating plant, and it has given perfect satisfaction, even in the coldest weather. My house has been 7o* F. for Police and Firemen | Threaten to Quit, | Resenting “Levies” Special Dispatch to The Star.’ BALTIMORE, July 27.-—Police and firemen of Baltimore County threaten to resign in a body be- cause of political “levies” running from $40 to $100. It is charged the demand was made by the Democratic organiza- tion for the approaching primary election expenses. Harrison Rider, chairman of the county commis- sioners, is blamed by the men for the demand. Each policeman and fireman has been notified a donation of $40 is expected, while ranking officers are expected to pay higher sums, ac- cording to their rank, up to $100, it is said. JUICE OF LEMON WHITENS SKIN The only harm- less way to bleach the skin white is to mix the juice of two lemons with three ounces of Orchard ‘White, which any druggist will sup- ply for a few R cents. Shake well in a bottle, and you have a whole uarter-pint of the most wonderful skin whitener, softener and beautifier Massage this sweetly fragrant lemon bleach into the face, neck, arms and hands.
