0.0 ERPLOTNENT - REPORTED STEADY Indicauons This Month Point :to Balanced Labor Supply . and Demand. ‘With an increasing volume of build- g‘ult for July, employment in- in Washington for the cur- rent month were that the labor supply and demand would be. well balanced. Skilled and unskilled workers were well employed in June, the Federal employment director for ‘Washington declared today, and the. volume of building is on the increase. + Work was started in June o several major projects, including a ‘250‘000 office building and a $2,500,; 000 "program of additions and im- provements to a manual training #chool. Practically all the resident building tradesmen were sald to be steadily employed, . The director added that a large nmumber of laborers aré employed. on the street improvement and’ paving. program now under way, with more work of this nature planned for early. release. Because of the vacation period, the director said, the demand for colored domestic. help has de- creased, although there is very little surplus apparent. = Clerical - workers and sales persoris make up the ma- jority of the small number of unem- . ployed existing in Wash! ingto ‘The Virginia State director rnépaned the resident supply of all classes of labor. as fairly well employed during sthe entire month of June, with no large surplus of labor apparent in any section. Major industries were said to be operating on practically normal echedules, and in most cases with their usual-quotas of ‘employes engaged. Building, while not showing any increase,. maintained a volume sufficient to employ practically all resi. dent skilled building craftsmen. The farm labor supply and demand are well balanced, except in one or two localities, where slight shortage of this class of help exists. Baltimore showed a slight decrease in employment during June, but the reduction was well distributed, accord- ing to the Maryland director, while. general erployment = conditions in Cumberland and Frederick. were de- scribed as satisfactory. Industrial em- / ployment throughdut West Virginia maintained a satisfactory volume dur- ing June, even though there were some temporary reductions made in'| & few industries. RAILROAD GIVEN BLAME.
