‘1 EBER[E ATTEMPIS . TOCHEERUPRIVAL But Enulish S\vimmer Falls to Show Up and Parey Is, Not Held. BY GERTRUDF EDERLE. By Cable to The Star. f CAPE GRIS-NEZ, France, July 15. ~—Frank Perks, the English swim- mer, who has been training at Dover for & transchannel attempt, missed a grand celebration “in his honor Tuesday night. Upon _our m.lvlnz a message saying Perks was coming over and intended taking off from Gris-Nez on his attempt to swim the channel, we /. went to Audinghan and bought a large supply of fireworks, 'which we planned to set off on the rocks along the shore by way of cheering up Perks while he was making his effort. The word loon eirculated Yo Gris- Nez and a crowd gathered at the edge of the cliffs btlow the light- house to await Perks’ arrival in his boat from the English side., We were all greatly excited, as nol has yet attempted to swim the chan- nel this year and we were anxious to give the first aspirant to 'make the try a good send-off. Assemblage on Clff: In thé gathering on the Cliff were my sister Margaret, Helmy, the Feyptian swimmer; Joe Costa, the tug magnate, and his wife, Lillian Cannon, the altimore swimmer, and her husband, Edward Day; my . trainer, Will Burgess; Jabez Wolff, my last year's trainer; several news- paper correspondents and a number of villagers, We all waited two hours when a cold wind sprang up. As midnight passed we were getting sleepy and there was still no sign of Perks. The light on a boat we thought might be his faded in a fog in the direction of the North Sea, disap- peared, and the crowd, disappointed, dispersed. Going down the hill Burgess slipped and_fell over a rabbit hole. “That's right, Bill, you lead the way -and when you slip we will known there's a hole d_be_ care- ful to avoid it,” said Big-hearted, that's Wolff all over. We have heard nothing yet of Perks, who evidently revised his plans. The fireworks we didn't get a chance to use Tuesday night we set off last night, as July 14 is a national fete day in France and Helmy's 1% twenty-eighth birthday as well, and gave us plenty of excuse for cele- brating. Automobiles have been speeding’| by all day toward the'beich. A holi- day and hot weather 'always mke the channel popular here. If we have a few weeks of weather like that of the last few days it will make possible my second attempt to swim to England much earlier than we had anticipated. (Copyright 1926.) S NEW TRAP IS DESIGNED TO CAPTURE BEAVERS R AR |\, Device Invented by Vernon' Bailey Is Intended to Get Animals * Alive for Propagation. A new trap designed chiefly to oapture beavers alive for pro) and restocking purposes, invented by Vernon Bailey of the Biological Survey of the United States Depart- ment of Agriculture, has _been * patented and dedicated to the people of the United States. ‘It may be manufactured by any one either for personal use or sale. The trap has g heen thoroughly tuud and found satisfactory in By following the lpofiluflom and directions given in miscellaneous cir- «ular No. 69-M, just issued, by the department, any machinest of prac- tical mechanic should be able to make the trap in small lots at a cost for materials of about §7, and for shop work' about $3. The circular also gives detailed in- structions as to the operation of the trap. A captive beaver can be carried to camp lnl@e the trap, or in a gunny sack, which®can be slipped over the head and body while the animal is still in the trap.
