INST'.QI.F.!IENT LXVIL John Forgives Connington. R. DINGWALL thought fit to assert himself. “All this must he most in teresting to Mr. Panton and other members of his fam- 1ly.” he broke in, with a little cough of excuse for interrupting a story which did not bear directly on the erime under investigation. “but in vour present state, Connington, I think you ought to husband your strength. Therefore I must ask you it you are prepared mow to tell us what happened the night before last.” “No need to make a long varn of that,” came the muttered reply. “Get your papers ready and take down what I say. All right? Well, there ‘was no beating about the bush for me. T traveled through from London and fell in with Capt. Panton both at Fort Williams and Mallaig. . What is more, 1 saw the young lady*whom Alistair Panton had married. I fancy I know a bit about women; but I'll have to go to xchool again in the next world if that nice looking girl cares two straws for any one on earth except Capt. John. e Yes, put, that down. It's im portant. because—don't you see?—it gave me another hold on Alistajr. S T went straight to the castle and sent in my name. The major came out in a towering réageé. but that didn’t flurry me at all, and he was becoming a trifle more reasonable when an old gentle. man, Lord Oban, I believe, joined us. | He had heard enough to make him ruspicious, but T didn’'t mind that—it was really a score for me-—so the major hurried off to the village, and we arranged to meet that night. He supplied all necessary directions, as to the boat and the landing stage, I mean, and made such a show of con- cealing my movements that I'm pretty sure he meant to push me into the lake and keep me there till I crocked. Not being exactly that sort of a fool, I wrote the whole story and put it ih a sealed envelope, which I sent to my hank in London, with the request that if my death was reported the inclosed letter was to be sent to Scotland Yard. As I'm going to die now, Mr. Fur- neaux, my written ‘confession’ will reach you by the next post.” ‘The man chuckled dreadfully when he noted the astonishment on every face. “Yes, that's O. K.,” he said the good of lying naw? Well, we met as planned, and the major offered me 50 pounds, which T just pushed back at him with a grin. Then he pulled a revolver, but 1 stopped any excite- ment by telling him about the letter ¥ safe in the mall bag. Wt that he swore the ceremony she learns that John ie | and 16 Alistan and she i | “What's | at me, said he didn't care a rap for any charge I could bring against | him. and turned on his heel. T felt the hook catch, and thought it was in his collar, so I jerked it hard. He | fell hackward and 1 knew in a second | I had made the biggest mistake of my life. He gurgled something, but he was done for, 8o I scrambled into the boat, thinking that perhaps no one would associate me with the affair if 1 could reach Mallaig without attract- ing attention. 1 may as well admit, too. that I believed Mr. John here would be the first to come under sus- picion. Of course, he might be able | to clear himself, but at the moment | 1 didn't care whether he did ér rot. I was only a few feet away from the boathouse, and hidden by -it, when a light flashed on the landing stage, and | I heard voices. Then a police whistle was blown, evidently. to raise an alarm, and in a minute or two a gun was fired. That broke me up. I lost my nerve and crossed the lake instead of going back to the bridge, as I had intended. Oh, T remember now! A car came along the road at the wrong time for me. While I was still trying hard to recover my wits and decide how to act for the hest I set eves on that damned dog. He finished me. T went almost out of my mind. 1 sup- q Al through the night 1 imagined 1 was being followed by the devil. Even now I can't guess how he got_on my track so quickly. Dogs don't swim across wide lakes." “This deg does,” said John, not even 'ving to repress a smile, because Spot was more to him than all the Alistair Pantonk and Ferdinand Conningtons lin creation. “He and 1 watched vou disappearing in the mist and I sent { him after you.” | “Well, well+was -that the way of |it2 . .. I'm sorry, Mr. Lawyer, it we gallop ahead of your pen, but be- tween you it will be easy to put. to- gether what I have said, and I'll sign —it T can. I've told you the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth—so help me—-! He fainted before that last appeal to the Deity passed his lips. Betty Bridg- north was not at all flurried. She watched his eyes and felt his heart. “He will die before the day is out.,” she announced calmly, “‘but he is sure to recover consciousness soon. Leave him to me. Please send in the nurse, who is_sitting in the garden at the back. I'll warn you when he is fit to receive you again, Mr. Dingwall.” An hour later the procurator fiscal read what he had written, Sheldon’s notes supplying the full text. Con- nington listened in silence to the end. Then he took the pen given him by Betty and added a brief sentence be- fore signing his name. ' His hand- writing was shaky but clear. The few inserted words were much to the point. ‘They ran: “1 am sorry for ul&o mischief 1 have caused. 1 ask my old company commander to pardon me." Dr. Dingwell showed that pathetic scrawl to Panton, who was waiting outside, leaving to the detectives the task of attesting the signature. “What are these initials after the name?” inquired the puzzled lawyer. John swallowed hard before he an- swered. “C. 8. M.. Company Sergeant Major! Dash it alll Why couldn't things have turned out differently for each one of us?”’ He went hack intn the room where Betty and the hospital nurses were trying to persuade the dying man to drink some beef tea. He sought for and held a trembling hand. “Connington,” he sald, “if my for- the hoat hook I had used for making ' giveness is accepted by the final tribu- | i HE SOUGHT FOR AND HELD A TREMBLING HAND. nal as a final settlement it ix giver now, fully and freely. recover. If you do, and vou win through the present scrape, come to me wherever I am and you will find that I shall remember our four years | off comradeship and -forget that one day of evil." Their eyes met. Connington's face twitched dreadfully. He uttered no word, but it was evident that he un- derstood. “Leave us now, John," sald Betty hurriedly. “He must be allowed to rest. (Conyright. 1926. by Louis Tracy.) (Concluded tomorrow.) PR SCIENTISTS BORE HOLES INTO KILAUEA’S CRATER Dr. Jagger Expects to Learn More of Subterranean Heat by Experiments. HONOLULU, July 1 (#).—Sclentists who desire to know more about vol. canoes and especially about the Kil- auea Volcano, on the Island of Hawalil, are boring a network of holes around the vast crater. The holes are being hored with com- praesed air drills, and are 10 feet deep. There will be one every 1,000 feet. Dr. Thomas A. Jaggar, in charge of the Kilauea Volcano observatory, who is directing the work, expects to learn something about subterranean h'ei;l in its relation to volcanic ac- tivity. The.holes .will he encased around the top and capped so that tempera- ture tests may be made at any-time. It is thought that a rise in tempera- ture in the holes may presage an erup- tion and thus serve as a log of the life of the volcano. 4 Experimental holes previously drilled disclosed a wide variaton in tempera- ture, seemingly without reference to the proximity of Halemaumau Vol- cano. This convinced sclentists that systematic temperature . observations would be valuable. Building Great Aoqueduct. ATHENS, July' 1. (#).—Over the same route taken by the famous Mara- thon runner when he hastened to in- form the Athenians of the Hellenic victory over the Perslan hordes, American engineers now are building a great aqueduct to supply the ever. growing population of Athens and Piraeus with water. ‘The new system, costing $10,000,000, replaces the antiquated Hadrian aque- duct, built by the famous emperor of that name 140 years after the death of Christ.
