By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, June 5.—Today's brief session of the stock market was called upon to absorb a fairly large volume of profit taking and bear selling, but it developed splendid resistance to Closing quotations disclosed considerable irregularity, but the in- dustrial average showed a net loss of less than one-tenth of one point, while the railroad average advanced nearly two-fifths of a point. Total sales ag- gregate 622,400 shares. Overnight business news was rather Steel shares, however, respond to reports of an in- crease in the price of heavy melting steel scrap, and a better demand for pipe. United States Steel common closed nearly a point higher at 126, after having sold down to 125%. Despite the. generaly favorable na- ture of the oil trade news, the petro- leum shares were inclined to heavi- ness, some of the liquidation being long stocks, who were disappointed at their failure to make a better response to the excellent earning statement of practically all companies and the bull- ish statistics on gasoline consumption. Atlantic Refining broke to 1161, but later rallied to 118%, where it was off 234 points on the day. Most of the other changes in that group were fractional. Although the advance of the last week had carried the Industrial averages above the high mark reached on the recovery last month, the short interest, judging from the large num- ber of stock loaning “flat” or at a premium, is still of substantial pro- portions. The few outstanding weak spots were American Woolen preferred, Punta Alegre Sugar, Wilson pre- ferred (new), and Worthington Pump. On the other hand, bullish demonstra- tions were successfully conducted in American and Foreign Power, Ameri- san Safety Razor, International Tele- phone and Sterling Products. Trading in the ralls was quiet, but the understone was strong. Specu- lative interest centered largely in Bal- timore & Ohio, New York Central and “Nickel Plate,” all of which showed net gains of two points or more. Foreign exchange trading was of the usual quiet half-holiday character, with the principal rates holding steady. Demand _sterling rules around $4.8614, and French and Bel- gian france were slightly higher around 3.08%; and 3.10% cents, respec- tively. Polish zioty dropped half a cent to 9 cents. Other changes were largely nominal. BALTIMORE PRODUCE. BALTIMORE, June 5 (Special)l— Receipts of Maryland and Virginia strawberries have been very liberal the past week, and the market con- sequently shows a decline in values despite the fact that the demand con- tinues good, but is centered on fancy stock, while all ordinary fruit sells low and mostly to packers. Last Sat- urday Maryland berries were bring- ing 16 to 20 a quart, and Virginia 12 to 22, while today Virginia berries are selling 10 to 15 and Maryland berries are bringing 12 to 18. Natlve and nearby garden truck under a good and constant demand continues steady, and prices are well maintained at the following quota- tions: Asparagus, 2.00 to 4.00 1.20 to 1.80 forr culis; > peas, 4.00 to per’ 5-pe oh mm.md dozen, and folk green h mper; 7.00 hundml kalu 50 and 40 bushel; lettuce, 25 to 60 bushel; Spring onions, 1.25 and 1.50 hundred; peas, 1.75 to 2.00 bushel; radishes, 1.50 to 2.50 hu dred rhubarb, 2.00 and 3.00 hundre spinuh 40 to 60 bushel. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 5.—Realizing sales today imposed considerable restraint upon bond trading with prices of all but high-grade rail and public utility issues drifting irregu- larly lower. The usual Saturday let- up in activity“intensified the market’s dullness. Foreign obligations continued to slide back today, forfeiting a large part of the gains established earlier the week. German corporation issues yielded readily to profit taking although the government's bonds held firm around the year's top price. Mexican obligations also were heavy. The pronounced weakness of sugar company lines was the outstanding feature of trading in the domestic list. Selling was inspired by the omission of the Manati pfd. dividend and this company's report calling at- tention to unfavorable conditions in the industry. Losses of a point or so were recorded by Manati, Cuba Cane and Franciscan {ssues. Skelly Oil 61%s fell back 3% points and Ameri- can Writing Paper 6s 2 points. Buying interest was kept alive in a few railroad issues, but changes generally were limited to fractions. Island _refunding 4s, northern ic 4s, Towa Central 45, New ven 45 and New York Susque- nd Western 58 were in_de- mand, but the Nickel Plate and Erfe issues lagged. e In England's recent influenza epi- demic many deaths of people over 65 years old occurred, while in some other countries the “flu”’ has taken young rather than old. High. 45% FINANCIAL. BONDS G0 LOWER | [ s s NEW YORK, June 5 () —The quick recovery of the anthracite-pro- ducing companies since the resump- tion of mining last February has drawn attention to the dividend meet- ings of the Glen K Alden Coal Co. and the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. this month. Because of the heavy tonnage mined in the past few months and the strong demand for anthracite, due to the unseasonable weather this Spring, it is believed that both companies will be in a position to take favorable dividend action. Other possibilities are a stock split-up by Glen Alden and the acquisition of other proper- tles by the Lehigh Valley, but action on these matters probably will be de- ferred. Insurance companies in the United States are becoming more and more an important factor in the financing and developing of the country’s busi- ness, says a review by Dominick & Dominick. For the first quarter of 1926 life insurance companies re- ported an increase of 6 per cent in volume of business over the same period of 1925, which accordingly means more funds avallable for in- vestments. Private advices from the South- west received in the financial district predict another advance in Gulf Coast Crude Ol to stimulate drilling in ol fields. Production in this district re cently has fallen below 100,000 barvel: a week. Figures compiled by the Commer clal and Financial Chronicle show that bank clearings in the leadinz citles for the past week fotaled $9,322,255,405, a decrease of 15.4 per cent from the corresponding period last year, when clearings aggregated $11,019,860,078. The holiday interrup- tion was considered mainiy respons ible for the drop, which in New York City alone amounted to more.than 2¢ per cent. Average prices of 66 bonds, repre senting six different show an increase of .05 point for May, according to an index of secur ity prices compiled by the New York “*rust Co. ility obligations registered the t advance. Omission of the Manat! Sugar pre ferred” dividend has redirected atter tion to the unsatisfactory conditione prevafling in this industry. The re striction of the Cuban crop eventu ally is expected to prove bheneficia! but the company pointed out that the effect so far has been to defer the conversion into cash of part of the cane planted, while the abnormally low price of sugar during the present crop season has increased the diffi culty of the producers.
