By Consolidated Press. CHICAGO, May 15.——Are the Great '| Lakes—the world's most vital inland waterways—naturally drying up, or are they being drained dry by in- creasing artificial diversion of lake water? That is no academic question for those who have seen Lakes Michigan and Huron go down 4 feet since 1918, It 18 w most werlous occurrence, which is accentuated just at this time by announcement of the Cana- dian government thmt Lake Superior has dropped 9 inches since last year. Resort owners, here this week for the National Outdoor Life Exposk- tion, are thoroughly perturbed over their receding lake fronts. While Lakes Michigan and Huron at the present time are at the lowest point in their recorded history, the writer, in going back over the lake level records, finds that there have been other times when situations al- most as bad existed. In the past 65 years Lakes Michi gan and Huron have varfed nearly 6 feet in their levels, though the tendency has been downward. In 1895 the levels were within half foot of being as low as at present, while in 188¢ they were 6 feet above the present level. The churts show cycles of from 5 to 10 years when the tendency first is up and then down. Loss is Apportioned. Rainfall, or rather the lack of it, and a high rate of evaporation are set down as the main causes for the fluctuations. In fact, out of the last 40 inches of fall, it is estimated that 22 inches wero caused by light rain and heavy evaporation, ¥ inches by increasing the flow in the’St. Clair and Detroit Rivers, between 6 and 6 inches by the diversion of water at Chicago for disposal of the city's sew- age, 3 Inches by retention of water in Lake Superior for power purposes, and 2 Inches by diversion of water from Lake Erfe. Just now a bitter fight is being waged agalnst Chicago for diverting a great amount of water for sewage disposal purposes. This diversion is admitted by Chicago, and is sald by Army engineers to be responsible for nearly 6 inches of the lowering lake levels. While not the principal cause for the big drop of several feet, the claim s that Chicago's diversion is the last straw {n breaking the pa- tience of those who are affected Ly the receding levels. serious by the fact that Great Lakes frelght carriers, the most economical in the world, are largely bullt for a 22-foot draft.” It is fmportant to load them to capacity to get maximum re turns, but the shallow harbors result- ing from the lowered lakes make a 19-foot draft about the maximum. However, if nature follows the course she has taken {n the past, a turn for the better should be cxpected before many moons, with a gradual rise of luke levels in store. e e - BOUQUETS TABOOED.
