30 * TREND S HEAER NSTOGK MARSET U. S. Steel and General Motors Stronger—Rubber Issues Advance. BY STUART P. W Special Dispatch to The St NEW YORK. April 29.- pal price moveiments on Stoc] ohange today were higher. There ns, however, rather more active there was still no sign of ihe public rushing back into the market the way it had done last Autumn and in_the early Wintel Wall Street was encouraged by the further advance in United States Steel and by the very conspicuous strength in General Motors. The action of these two stocls was (ke to indi- cate banking sentiment. Still in each instance the rise could have been per- fectly well set down to individuai rather than general condit The expectation is that States Steel w ve extra dividends to declare later in the year, provided the steel business holds u The rise in General Motors had little effect upon most of the other members of the motor group. Fisher Body went higher on renewal of the report that General Motors was after the minority interest. Mack Trucks was higher for a time, but Hudson Motor was freely supplied. Among the pulbiic utilities there was some buying in Manhattan modified guarantee at higher prices. Public Service of New Jersey was also fairly strong. Consolidated Gas, Standard Gas and Electric and Brooklyn Man- hattan Tr: were higher, but there was not the push in this class of stocks that there had been two months ago. NEW YORK, April 29.—The bond market was strong again today, but interest was centered not so much lon the United States Government iasues or on the legal railway mort- gages as on middle and second grade bonds and on new offerings. In the last-named category feature was the quick disposal of the $37,000,000 Duke Price Power Co.. Ltd, first' Gs, due 1966, offered at par. Demand for this new issue was so large that the bonds went to point premium in the outside market In much the same way, recently offered new South American issues sold today at premiums over the issue price, one example being the Uruguay 6s. There was active trading over the counter in all the new bonds. \ On the exchange Skelly Oil 6135 took the place of prominence recently oc- cupied by International Mercantile Marine 6s. Because of the conver- sion privilege, the ofl bonds moved 4 points for every change of 1 point in the stock. They advanced rapidly today to a new high and at 1431, were 4 points above yesterday's close. Trading in the Marine fssue was less active, but the tone was steadier than yesterday. Buying of the local chiefly the Interborough obligations, was resumed and they all made suh- stantial gains. Wall Street pro- fesses to believe that sooner or later the Interborough will get an increase in_fare. The junior rallway bonds were quiet. Chicago Great Western s and some of the St. Paul issues werc fairly active, but there was little re- flection in the market of the favor- able March earnings report. In the investment list the gilt- edge issues were steady, but did nothing more. Ann Arbor 4s and Western Electric debentures reached new high levels. Foreign bonds were little changed. It was reported that negotiations were under way between American bankers and the government of Brazil for a new $60,000,000 loan to be placed half in New York and half in London. the tractions, POTATOES SCARCE. Anxiety Over McFadden Bill. Supporters of the McFadden banks ing bill are expressing more and more anxlety over the bill's chances of pa sage at this session of Congress as the time for consideration of the me: ure becomes shorter and shorter. If the Senate fails to take up the bill an immense amount of time, energy and argument will have been practically lost for the second time, as the bil was allowed to die in the same mane ner in the last session of Congress, The American Bankers' Associatiol keenly approves both the extension 01 Federal Reserve charters and the branch bankling legislation as embode ied in the McFadden bill with the Hull amendments. But the president, Ose car Wells, expresses opposition to cous » pling the two measures together if such action will impede the prograss of the original bill. The associatlo: wants the two features of the bf dealt with separately if such action, will speed up the final action Every day sees the opponents of {branch banking taking new couraze v, { and_hoping for an early adjournmeng 1 of Congress.
