MACKAY DECRIES “PUBLICITY" TALES Declares Certain Papers Are Using Malicious Means in Berlm Case. By tha Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 8.—Clarence H. Mackay vesterday broke the long silence he had maintained since the sacret marriage of his daughter Ellin to Irving Berlin, to protest against the “relentless and maliclous” pub- licity involving his name by “a cer- taln type of newspaper.” In a statement which he authorized an assoclate to issue to the Asso. ciatéd Press reports that a reconcilia- tion with his daughter was imminent as a result of intervention by Mrs. Kenneth O'Brian, his eldést daugh ter, and Mrs. James A. Stillman, were denied. Mr. Mackay, the statement said, considers that much of the publicity following the marriage of his daugh-|~ ter to the song writer, who rose to be one of Broadway's idols from a start as singing waiter in Mike's” saloon. on the Bowery, “sadly stretched the limits of decent journalism.” He charactérized this publicity as ‘vulgar and lying” and expressed the opinion that it “must be nauseating to decent family people.” It orig- inated, he belleved, “from press agent sources only too apparent.” The Associated Press had not car- ried the reports to which Mr. Mackay referred today. Reports circulated yesterday that Mr. Mackay planned to sail for Kurope on the Mauretania, but when the ship left its dock he had not been seen to go on board, nor was his ORCHESTRA CONCERT.
